Fancy abit of green laning/off roading, Hemel?

Would like to try a bit of it but would like somewhere local to do it..
I live in Hemel (Hertfordshire) so closer the better.

If any of you have any good places then that would be great.

Thanks

The Ridgeway runs around Princes Risborough & High Wycombe areas but its closed until May.

Devils Pit is a good pay/play site near Luton.

Whaddon is another pay/play site near Milton Keynes but the last time I was there it was overrun with Censored idiots with MOT failure off-road wrecks who were totally mad, including one who despite clear warnings ran over my winch cable while I was doing a recovery! I just managed to take the tension off in time. I would never go back there but that is just my personal opinion.

If you check out the Oct 2011 edition of LRO it lists some lanes around Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield & Hoddesdon and more east of there but I can't find any closer than that.

I can email you a copy of the pages if you'd like?

Hi Rich

I've just joined the forum (and not a D3 owner), but I do have a LandRover, live down the A41 from Hemel and do the occasional bit of laning.

There is a group of us that go out in the Beds / Herts / Essex area and we have a pub meet every month in Dunstable

If you're new, I'd be more than happy to show you a few local ones.

Hi Rich

I've got a 1963 LWB station wagon, but I'm under pressure from SWMBO to get rid and get "something better" so I was toying with the idea of a D3. I do a bit of laning now and again, but wondered if it was going to be a bit too nice. I'm used to not caring too much about scratches and dents, so I've been looking for people's D3 laning experiences.

Hi jcuk,

I'm also in the your area & greenlane regularly. I also go to pay/play sites occasionally. My other club (www.rrr.co.uk) do regular trips over Salisbury plain & charity courtesy rides at various events, the biggest being the Silverstone Classic weekend (www.silverstoneclassic.com) in July. If you check out the 'whats on' section you'll find my car Confused and a couple of the pictures in my gallery are from Silverstone last year.

All this in a D4 which is not yet 3yrs old (its a GS with the 2.7L engine so its closer to a D3 than most). The paint is scratched (quite badly if I'm honest) but I haven't dented it yet Exclamation

In standard form they are great vehicles off-road, with minimal modifications they are unstoppable.

D3's are becoming very sensibly priced today I would recommend them everyday of the week..... do it & join the ranks of the owners of a 'permagrin' Very Happy

Wow, I'm really impressed that you're laning a D4 - what I don't want to do is buy something nice and not go laning because I'm scared to damage it. One of the guys from the pub meet I go to brought a brand new 90 (his first landy) and took it laning the first week he had it, so I guess I just need to man up a bit!

As for the scratches - I have a vague recollection from an LRO magazine of a clear plastic protector that could be applied to bodywork a bit like smartphone screen protectors. Maybe this would give me a bit more confidence.

I'm definitely getting more and more tempted. I managed to park my 109 next to a D3 last week and sizing them up it looks like I could get one in the garage which is a good thing. Next time I go past the local main dealer I think I'll pop in and see if there is a D3 I could test drive (I've never been in one let alone drive it one)

Sold two RR's, 1 highly modified classic off-roader & 1 very nice 2001 p38 Bordeaux, the D4 had to do both jobs. It was bought to use, it's always left dirty for a couple of days after a trip out to show people it's no 'Chelsea tractor' Laughing

I have looked at some paintwork protection but most are quite expensive & really I should have looked BEFORE the first lane, it's a bit late now Whistle

Go on, do it Rolling with laughter

Ooooh. You are really tempting me now. You are a bad man Evil or Very Mad

I quite often think about getting rid of the 109, usually when the brakes fail in three different ways simultaneously (last time it was a hose, slave and master cylinder all went at once) but this is the first time I've felt like it when it seems to be running ok.

I keep thinking of the benefits. Heating. Not being dripped on when it rains. Not having ice on the inside of the windscreen in the winter. Being able to hear passengers talk to me. Being able to go up hill without slowing down. Not needing to do 27 point turns in car parks. Being able to overtake things. Having a handbrake that works.... The list goes on

I've found out that there is a land rover experience center in Luton, so I'll save up the Tesco vouchers and take out a D4 to see what its like driving off road with Terrain Response. I'm assuming that the D4 and the D3 are similar and both massively different that I'm used to. ETC? DSC? E-Diff? ABS? Variable Ride Height? Pah! My big red lever seems to work fine without all that stuff. I just hope the electric gadgetry doesn't get in the way or make things disappointingly dull.
