Failed MOT on emissions. Injectors maybe?
Hey all. Thanks in advance.
My 2005 has failed its MOT on the emissions. Visibly too much blue smoke.
The garage is suggesting replacing the turbo, assuming the oil seals are faulty. I'm not so sure. I've plugged in the diagnostics and get the below readings on the injectors. Could the smoke be a result of too low pressure? I.e. poorly burnt diesel oil?

I agree, hence the question. I'm wondering whether I'm burning diesel (which is oil essentially) at too low pressure, causing the blue smoke. I'm not noticing any oil loss in the lubrication system, which makes me question their diagnosis.2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

I think the engine is burning a hole in the top of the piston, stop using the car.

Would this be caused by a faulty injector? And would a replacement solve it?2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

One reading really low, two really hgh.
I would hazard a guess the one reading low is doing so as the ecu thinks the injection cycle previous to it is to high so it is compensating.
Has the car been using oil?
Exhaust smoke on a common rail diesel is not as straight forward as older diesels.
Either way I would not be driving it for fear of internal damage.
Have a search as cyl number is not injector number.

Interesting. No noticeable oil usage. Not sufficient to cause such a high amount of smoke. It smokes most once warm and idling.
I'm wary of replacing the turbo first. Perhaps i should replace the injector first. Any idea what cylinder number this low injector reading relates to?2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

Well if its not using oll that should discount the turbo which is good news as that is an expensive job, sadly that most likley means you have at least one duff injector, and they are not cheap either!
Smoke on idle on a commmon rail diesel is a classic injector fail.
If you do some searching and reading on here you will find many posts on injectors, some people have managed to cure them with the odd new one or two, sometimes it lasts, and other times some more need changing shortly afterwards.
Six new ones are 1200 quid.
Cheapest answer may be to remove all of yours and get them tested, then you at least know where you stand.

Thanks for the advice chaps. I'll whip out the injectors and get them tested.2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

It could also be worn valve guide seals, on tick over with no boost there is a vacuum in the inlet side of the engine which can suck the oil down past the seals.
This causes blue smoke on idle and is worse as you drive away or rev the engine. The longer you leave it to idle the worse it gets.
When your driving and the turbo is spinning there is positive pressure in the inlet side and the oil cant leak.Andrew

What about a faulty oil separator, could this be the cause

Turbo will be spinning all the time the engine is running, not making boost grant you but doubt there is neg pressure in the manifolds.

Theres definatley neg pressure remove your map sensor with the engine running and put a finger over the hole.
I managed to trace a cracked inlet manifold by spraying brake cleaner on the manifold that was then sucked in and made the engine run roughAndrew
