Failed Gearbox Replacement
Hi Guys,
Long time lurker - first time poster
I have a 2014 D4 that I have owned for about 6 months that has recently had issues with "Gearbox Fault" and not going into drive/reverse when stationary. It went into the LR dealer for the 2nd time with this issue today.
They have told me that the gearbox has failed and needs replacing at a cost of £7,686!
I have asked them to open a case with LR UK to see what can be done as the vehicle only has 60,000 miles on it with a full LR service history, is well looked after and has done no offroading.
Does anyone have any experience of gearbox failure on a D4 so early and whether LR UK offered to help?
If LR UK do not help out - does anyone have any suggestions for a cheaper alternative than LR main dealer that they can recommend for a replacement gearbox?
60k miles is trivial for a 2014 D4 - you shouldn't be having these problems.
I am astounded by the price you have been quoted. If you haven't been given a detailed quotation, then I think you should ask for one & post a copy here.
I assume you have no warrantee? Undoubtedly an independent would give you a better price than a JLR franchisee. Whereabouts in Sussex are you, it's a big county?
Is the car drivable? Have the codes been read? If "yes", with what result.
Good luck.

Hi NJSS,
Based in Eastbourne, using Harwoods LR dealer in Lewes.
I was provided the quote via the LR dealers online system with the following information:
-----
Gearbox issues and fault warnings. Confirmed Engine Revs flaring up whilst driving and slipping in gears, confirmed engine revving over 2500 rpm in 6th gear at only 30 mph, plus slipping in lower gears also. Checked faults. Found P178A-07 Transmission friction element B or E mechanical failures, P07DE-07 incorrect shift from gear 3 mechanical failures, P2702-07 Transmission element C apply time performance mechanical failures faults stored. Checked fault info, found internal gearbox failure listed as concern. Checked Gearbox Fluid, confirmed no external leaks, Confirmed Fluid dark with metallic looking particles in Fluid. Internal gearbox failure, Requires replacement Auto gearbox, plus Oil cooler flush and fluids etc.
------
Unfortunately no warranty, however the car is still drivable.
I have attached a screenshot of the quote

I know it’s a fair way from you but I would try speaking to Bristol transmissions I think it is they have a good reputationD3 in Buckingham blue now SWMBO's Mine D4 commercial
Xenon's fitted Timed climate
EGR Blanked Remapped
Remap Reversing Camera
gear box reset
updated Bluetooth
4x4 info
all done by Bodsy
Fridge fitted
Reversing camera fitted
You might have to have someone strip the gearbox out of the car & replace it for you. Certainly they are worth talking to.

I think Del had his gearbox done on the old Blue Bus somewhere south of the M25.
I’m sure he will be along soon.

Update on my situation:
Land Rover UK have come back and said they will not help at all and that its my fault for not having an extended warranty. The attitude of the person on the phone was absolutely disgusting and basically said that they don't give a lifespan for the vehicle parts.
After this experience I believe I might have to say goodbye to being a Land Rover customer after owning a few of their vehicles over the years.
8K for a new Gearbox when the Crankshaft might go next month for another 16K which they wont cover even though its known to be a manufacturing fault.
I have had issues with other brands out of warranty and the manufacturers have helped out ie BMW.
I did call Bristol Transmission who can do a refurb for about 4K which is a fair bit less but I feel like I have lost faith in the vehicle and the brand at this point. Its no wonder JLR are makiing huge losses if they treat their customers like this.

The guy I use in Lancing says it's very rare for the 8 speed to go, and, although rare itself, it could be the torque converter.
He also says a gearbox flush at £380 might cure it if you get it early enough, but if not he thinks it'll only be the converter, not the gearbox.
Give him a call, Dave @ R&G Autocare 01903 764423 or 07800 515287
He looks after both my D4 and RRS, and so far whenever I have a problem, he knows what it is and how to fix it.
