Expo Rack
I am considering fitting an expo rack to my D3 as I am soon to be using the 6th seat full-time (so losing half the boot space).
I remember from when I had the G4 that it suffered a fair bit from wind noise, what are the thoughts of those that have it fitted? Is it really that bad and can it be modified at all to reduce the noise? Also, what effect does it have on mpg?2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

I fitted mine two weeks ago CFB and did a round trip of 100 miles in strong winds. I was getting 29.5 mpg by the trip calculator which is as good as I've had without it fitted. The noise becomes very noticeable over 70mph but below that, no complaints. In order to get SWMBO used to it (the noise), I progressively lowered the volume on the radio.
Hope that's helpful.

CFB I keep the rack on all the time and it did suffer with a bit of wind noise around 80mph
I took a 1/2 inch thick strip of electrical safety matting self tapped into the inside of the frame .....works a treat ...I can only hear my MTR's with this modification
I think the noise is actually more to do with the front faces of the lights and the plaque, hence I will be taking mine off for a while.

I don't have lights so less noise I guess - time it takes to remove is 8 bolts 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
There are four 10mm bolts to tighten the main body to the roof rails.
The front "legs" need an allen bolt.
All told, about 10 minutes to fit? Similar to remove. First fit will take longer as you'll need to remove the front roof trims and drill them for the front leg mounting. Get yourself some 1/2" blanking grommets from any electrical or motor factors to fill the holes in your roof trim where the front legs usually go.
I think 07my onwards come with holes pre-drilled and blanking plates in-situ, so dead quick on these.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Just took the plunge and ordered one. Went for the G4 spec one that Devon 4x4 have on special offer, SWMBO actually told me to get it normally hates me spending money on cars but agrees that we need the extra storage and space once junior CFB arrives.
Does the cowl at the front for the lights remove? Can't afford to buy lights for it just yet.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Cowl does , but what pics I have seen of the back of them , the light brackets are riveted to the main frame.
Someone no doubt will confirm or deny.
Another 5 weeks before I pick up mine

Light brackets can stay, not worried about them.

You saw my set up last Sunday at Tong - it's been on since new - almost a year now and I have to say that I've hardly noticed any noise whatsoever. I'm getting 29/30 mpg overall, but I don't know how much difference the rack has made because it's always been there. The only thing I have noticed is that with a strong head wind it makes a dramatic difference to fuel consumption which can drop to 24/25 - particularly on motorways.I was taught to be cautious.
