after getting the low coolant level light coming on intermittent, decided to change the expansion bottle. however after firstly getting the wrong bottle delivered eventually got the right one and fitted it yesterday. however the low coolant level light is now permanently on and won't go off. I have tried putting the old sensor back in but still the same.
have I done something wrong or is it possibly a duff replacement bottle and the float thing isn't working

I suspect the float has become porous in your case, landyhead.
It may be a D4 but they still use the same parts for door latches, coolant expansion tanks, and most other things that fail on a regular basis on a D3.
You can replace the float but it's messy and considerably easier to swap out the entire tank.

Woolmeister thanks for reply
guess it is ok to drive until tank replaced
do you happen to know part number , probably go for after market as genuine only lasted 2 years , so obviously
6 years of D3 only fault was air suspension pump 3 months ago.
D4 1 day and a fault.
Nigels888 has mentioned his light is still on after replacing, could it be his new one is faulty or maybe need diagnostic to turn fault off ???welsh petrol head

Should be fine to drive provided you are able to visually check that there is the correct quantity of coolant in the expansion tank and no visible leaks anywhere. The last thing you want to do is cook your SDV6.
Not sure about Nigels888's problem. Would not have thought that the fault needs clearing once the tank has been replaced. Hopefully somebody more experienced will be along shortly.

took the new bottle out again, and it was apparent that the float didn't float when filled with water it sank straight to the bottom. we tested the light by moving the float to the top and laying bottle on side so it couldn't sink again and the light went off. so it would appear to be a faulty new bottle (which was a genuine one) I then put the old bottle back on and the light went off. even though if you get a bit spirited in the driving it comes back on.
now waiting for another new one. plus side is that I am a dab hand at swapping these now

Useful to know.
I need to replace my coolant expansion tank at some point soon because I have a slight leak from the bleed screw (and the bleed screw does not have a replacement part number on the early ones - the newer ones do).
Am sure there is not much difference between Genuine and aftermarket (other than price, of course).

update, ordered a Brit part coolant bottle, rained for 2 weeks, finally got it fitted Sunday, good quality part
removed grill and headlight (childs play) no bolts or screws all just clips out , bottle easy to remove , 2 bolts and 2 hoses, bottom hose a little fiddly to get at , drew some blood
Light went out straight away , easy fix for £30
Thanks for advice guys , think anyone that can hold a spanner can do thiswelsh petrol head
