They have a cut out so most of the smoke comes out downward anyway.

It's to do with the soot that's produced by a diesel, could apparently be dangerous to the car behind under hard acceleration when a cloud is pumped out.
As Wiggs says, one with a cut-out to emit most of the emissions does the trick, but I believe it's an MOT issue if it doesn't.
We had a stainless steel one stuck onto the Mazda, made a huge difference aesthetically..
Edit: And if it's anything like the one we had on the Mazda, ground clearence was noticebly reduced - signified by the CRUNCH sound when cresting hills etc... 2007 Porsche Boxster (987) 2.7

IIRC you're right. The 'latest' diesel engines however don't need to have them pointing downwards....I'm not sure of the exact criteria for letting them point outwards like a petrol engine....maybe it needs a DPF or for the engine to be Euro V compliant or something like them.
So no....you've definitely got room for a few more rum & cokes before the night's out yet

Last year I changed the exhaust system on my 1998 50th Anniversary Edition D1 and it is now 'side exit' just behind the nearside wheel arch. The bit of stainless on the end of the exhaust comes straight out the side through a Devon 4x4 stainless finisher. The motor went through an MOT just before Christmas without any problems.

"Furthermore, the exhaust gases emanating from the tailpipe will be uniformly dispersed into the atmosphere. In some instances the speed of the vehicle will be sufficient to create a negative presence at the outlet of the exhaust tailpipe to assist in the evacuation of the exhaust gases."

supplier details
the ones shown further up the thread, and fitted on mine came from here:
Part Number B144, £38 each, plus P&P from:
Trillogy Ltd
Tingewick Rd Ind Pk
Buckingham
01280 822865
just thought of a couple of things, if you contact Trillogy, dont ask for D3 exhaust trims, they won't have a clue, just ask for 2 x B144, as if they know these fit D3 they might up the price.

Just a quick question to all of you that have actually stuck these on your D3s.
I thought about fitting these some time ago, but decided against it because it seems that you're really going to up the departure angle.
Has anyone fitted them and gone off-road with them (and I mean stupid, balls-out off-road, not just over a slippy grass field).
Any casualties or did they come out unscathed?2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

not if you've got the fixed towbar - departure angle already f*cked.

As more and more motoring offences are being targeted by CCTV , fixed and mobile cameras with less police on the roads the advantages are there as proved by the number of plates stolen last year.
Because of the demand there are internet companies that are based in Ireland that will sell you legally for them a UK plate with no proof of ownership.
So I could be driving my D3 on your plates chance of getting caught virtually nil until I rack up some fines and you report it. It then gets on ANPR and you get stopped as your plate is now marked. By this time Ive ditched that set and I search the site for somebody else who has a D3 same colour and does not bother to hide the reg.
I agree the risks are small but they are there, personally I wouldnt panic if a picture of my car shows the plate but also I wouldnt publicize my plate in my signiture strip.
P.S I am honest and would not obviously do the above but people are out there who would / are doing it.

I still don't see the problem. I guess upwards of 5,000 people can look at my D3 every week as I go about my business. What do I do about them What if the "Hokey Cokey" really is what it's all about?
