Excessive fuel consumption

I have an 05 Diesel which I struggle to get over 19.5 mpg (on board read out) driving really gently. I can't do a pump to pump check as it also has D3 leaky fuel tank syndrome when full, but it is substantially thirstier than my recently departed D2 TD5.
No signs of excess smoke apart from when I set off I have 0.5 miles downhill followed by an uphill section. As soon as I accelerate up this there are clouds of grey smoke behind for about a mile, but thereafter nothing...
Any thoughts?

You need to check all hoses for potential splitting.
Also, ensure you are not suffering brake binding which is very common on these.
Also, consider having the codes read to see what they reveal.
My own 55 manual is doing at least 50% more to the gallon than yours currently. Shocked

Had brakes binding on a previous D3, took at least 10mpg off! Carefully check for excessive heat around disks if they are binding....I burned my fingers doing this Laughing

My current 05 manual mpg is around 29mpg Thumbs Up

The dash fuel economy indicator is about as useful as a chocolate tea pot. A manual D3 should be doing around 26mpg urban, and 32 on motorway driving. As has been already stated check for brake binding. You say you have plumes of smoke on a gradient, is this with a cold engine?

19.5mpg on a gently-driven auto diesel suggests that something's not right, I'd say. Especially if that's what the dash computer is telling you, because real figures will be a couple of mpg lower.

I've never had less than 22.5mpg from a tankful since I bought the D3, and that's with almost entirely stopy-starty driving around town. An average tankful with a mix of local and distance driving will be mid 20s - and on a good long run I can count on 32-33. (Those are all actual calculated figures, not the lies that the dash computer tells!)

Thanks for all the replies, should have said that it is manual gearbox and most driving is on A and B roads with a little bit of not congested town work. Strangely does not drop significantly when towing....
The smoking is only with a cold engine and doesn't always happen. If it does then it doesn't do it for the rest of the day.
Showing 136k miles with FSH.
Have checked brakes, all ok. Fairly tuned into that due to my ancient Audi regularly suffering seized rear calipers...

I drive on similar roads with low traffic levels and get 26mpg.(manual) I never push the engine when cold allowing it to warm up gently. This is more to do with reducing load and wear on the engine and turbo, rather than mpg, though it can't hurt. The smoke you are seeing is unburnt fuel, you could try a little less right foot and see what happens. Shocked If you had a split induction hose there would be smoke from the exhaust all the time, so that seems unlikely to be an issue.

Doesn't the FSH burn diesel, may be worth looking at.

There is no question that is wrong it helps us all learn.
The MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor monitors air density (absolute pressure) in the manifold and sends messages to the ECM to adjust mixture, so yes it could make the engine run "rich" but that is normally accompanied by black smoke.

Taken from a magazine - In modern engines, the engine control module (ECM) measures or calculates air flow via either a mass air flow (MAF) or manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor. Turbocharged engines may use both, but naturally-aspirated engines typically use one or the other.

Now the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor detects air flow in the intake which also sends messages to the ECM related to how much fuel is required by the injectors.

Hope that helps answer your question.
