Further to the above, the car had been running on tickover for about half an hour, I then increased the revs to about 3000 whereupon it produced clouds of acrid white/grey smoke. I think I can detect a whiff of diesel on the dipstick too.....

Injector balance is off quite a bit barr No's 1 and 4. The offset window is between 800 and 1200 with a preference/bias around mid way or a little lower. It seems to me you are definitely overfuelling at the values you posted and not good for the engine oil, and therefore associated components!!
Are there any fault codes in the ECM? If not try and get someone with an IID to read them, just for peace of mind before you bite the bullet yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

It showed some intermittent injector duty codes which I cleared.
What bullet may I have to bite?

I thought you might ask that, New injector/s but get the codes first and go from there. You may need one or more, not cheap! So you want to be sure!yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

I'm just trying to get my head around the logic here... Looks like there is a problem with one or more injectors but how will that show on the dashboard mpg? I am assuming mpg is calculated via injector pulses vs wheel speed via the ecu, so if an injector is giving more than it should the ecu won't know unless there is some kind of closed loop like lambda on petrol cars...
Just trying to understand how it thinks!

There are some of us on here who have been trying to understand "how it thinks" for sometime now and are still trying
Personally I would be more concerned with rectifying that fault rather than anlalysing the algorithms of its less than accurate fuel economy indicator.
At the end of the day you can see the overfuelling in the exhaust, and smell it in the engine oil .
If it walks and quaks like a duck, then very possibly it is a duck. Just go through whats already been said to confirm before you commit to expense.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Just to conclude this thread, I had the injectors tested and five failed with one marginal even though the diagnostic only identified two dodgy ones.
So I bit the bullet and fitted six new injectors.... It starts and runs much nicer now with more low down power, I have done around 50 miles now on B roads and have seen up to 28mpg on the dash.
Happy days!

Nice one, pleased you have it sorted. Did you do the job yourself and may I ask how much it cost if not? Always curious to know just in case!
At least the cost can be recovered through much better fuel economy...2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

Due to the high cost of the injectors (£201 each was best I could find) I decided to take it to an independent specialist for a second opinion in case I had missed something obvious (and cheaper!).
Unfortunately my suspicions proved correct so the garage ended up doing the job.
Testing the old units cost £25+vat each but they waived this as I let them keep the old units.

So along with a new fuel filter and an alignment check total cost was just shy of £1600....

Thanks for the answer. That much would scrap most cars over ten years old. Did you ever consider a Hail Mary kill or cure? For years at the first sign of an injector issue- hunting, poor pick up or fuel, consumption I stick about half a litre or so of gun cleaning cellulose thinners in the tank. I usually stick a drop of castrol r or two stroke oil in too tomhelp the fuel pump from scouring itself. In thirty years I never once made the situation worse and I reckon it cures about sixty or seventy percent of the issue once it’s got to work and cleaned the injectors out. Works just as well for petrol as diesel in my experience. Much cheaper than those snake oil injector c,earner bottles you see in Halfords or garage forecourts too.Discovery 3 tdv6 HSE 2007
