Excess fuel use - Discovery 4 HSE TDV6
Hi, I'm new here, did some searching but didn't find info on this. We are on our third Disco TDV6 HSE, had two 3's and now a 4. The 4 is suppose to use about 10% less fuel than the 3's, but we are using about 25% more. On a 656km ( 410 mile ) run, last week, we used 75.22L ( 16.55 gal ) which is 11.46 litres per 100km - but the computer read 9.2 litre per 100km - which is also 25% out. In the 3 we could get 850km per tank ( so should get 900km+ from the 4 ), but we are lucky to get 700km. Anyone else noticed excess fuel use? Anyone else done an acurate check on what the computer states? Thanks, Stuart ( and hi from Christchurch, New Zealand - the new "rock & roll" ( earthquake ) city of the world ).

Welcome!! Does seem to be a characteristic of the D4 that it is a good bit thurstier, also threads complaining re this on sister site www.rrsport.co.uk . That was a meaty quake last year, 7.1 from memory, hope sorting out is going well.

How many miles have you done in the 4? May need to loosen up a bit yet?

2000 km into our first trip around Germany with the D4 and we are averaging 27.6 mpg (10.1 l per 100km) - not bad a for a car weighing in at 3 and a quarter tonnes.
OK so we are not exactly going mad - yesterday coming up from Bavaria via Thuringa to Sachsen Anhalt we did not exceed 130 kmph and it was motor way nearly the whole journey.LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF

Round trip to Birmingham from Exeter last week (about 350 miles) averaged 33.9mpg according to the computer and I used 58 litres (+/-) - 12.76 gallons. That makes it an actual figure of 27.42 mpg. and that was with the cruise control set at 65mph. Looks as though the computer is 20% out. No better than my D3 and I've done 15k in this one.
Moral of the story - just fill up and enjoy the grin factor of all its other attributes.

Now getting interesting, me around houses roughly 21/22 mpg.
Motorway at 80 approx 26 mpg, drop to 70 then approx 27

I'd say the D4 is thirstier than the D3, even allowing for the increased grin factor.
D3 averaged 26.0 over first 15k (before I stopped recording it all)
D4 average is 24.6 at 22k, best tank is 32.8 on a run that was all motorway or dual carriageway with the cruise at 60. But wearing my carpet slippers I managed 31.5 in the D3 up and down the A43 to Northampton, and that route has far more than its fair share of roundabouts - I'd have guessed the D3 would do considerably better on a straight comparison.

I wonder whether the 3.0 has so much torque that the EGR system is causing higher consumption because such light throttle is needed and the EGR valves are still partly open. Mine used less fuel (instant display) whilst cruising with a trailer when I increased speed a little, perhaps closing the EGR valves when a little bit extra power was required. I found my TD5 D2 used less fuel with the EGR valve disabled.Home of LLAMS, for LRs and Jeep GCs

To be honest, I just go by the trip computer because I could get quite downhearted otherwise and the missus has been on my case when she balances the books
It got close to 30mpg when I first got it and was driving gently up north in the snow. At around 1,200 miles in, I let her drive it and she drives like she stole it an managed to get mpg down tp 24 on a fairly decent run. There seems to be a link between me setting the speed alarm higher and the mpg getting lower
People still keep asking why I got rid of the XF and don't seem to accept that I think the D4 is just a whole load more fun 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT

Hi all
I make the same observations : my real consumption goes from
11 l at the very best to 12,5 l/100 this week going to ski
With 5 persons, full lugages and a roof case of 400 liters, half
Motorway and half normal road ...
Everytime I check my consumption, the computer gives me between
1 and 1,5 liters less ... It is not serious !!
Now I don't worry any more ... I probably have a too heavy foot and
enjoy too much the torque and power of this great engine and then ,
it is the price to pay !
It remains a fantastic car anyway !

probably does have lower consumption on the tightly controlled standard tests. but in normal driving conditions the larger chamber allows more fuel to be pumped in to build up the same pressure.There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song
