We have the raised air intake, a toyota had nothing. Our filter looked like a sand dune, the toyota barely had any dust.
The difference is that the toyota takes it's air from inside the engine compartment, and we had a sand storm blow directly in our intake. There were even some small stones in our filter compartment. Anyway, i would say , use the raised intake, use dry filters(easy to clean but watch out you don't blow the compartment out with your compressor without really making sure that you have closed the intake!) . Also , it could be an idea to modify the raised intake with something that keeps small stones out, because the upper little "fence" where the air enters has quite big roster holes.

Our original Discovery RAI takes the air from behind, so it's the good looker, but it still takes up
loads of sand.
The only real argument for a raised air intake seems to be if you go deep wading into the
water, but knowing now what sensors are submerged, I would not believe any commercial and not go deeper
then 30cms and really slow, because otherwise, after some time(the time it takes for corrosion to crawl deep into the 100km wiring of the D3)
you will be awarded with all kinds of electrical woes.
