EPB cleaned by applying brake while moving. Is it a myth?

I have been informed that the preffered technique for cleaning out the EPB by service agents with no computer is to simply drive at 10mph and apply the brake.

This gives a sharp but steady decelleration and the job is done.

Sounds far too simple for my liking and I can't see how that removes muck from the mechanism - just the break contact surfaces. Anyone know the truth behind this?

it doesn't work like that, application of the EPB at that speed operates the ABS not EPB. there is a bedding in procedure to be used as part of the EPB service procedure that operates only the EPB shoes but this is not, and should not be used as a substitute for a strip, clean & adjust as defined in LR workshop procedures
