Engine won't start. might be good news????

Hello All,

I don't know if you have read my other posts but I have just purchased a 2008 D3 for the princely sum of €3200.

The catch is that the engine doesn't start.

When I brought the car back from the transporter that had recovered it from the motorway (when it cut out) in Septmeber, the battery was completely flat (it had stood for nearly 6 months!!). I set the battery charging, and by mistake when I turned the ignition on, I turned too far, and the engine turned (but didn't start).

At first I thought it was the timing belt, and I was going to have the engine overhauled by a retired friend of mine, but I am now not convinced that the belt is the problem.

I plugged in my IID tool, and even with the ignition on, I am not getting ANY fuel rail pressure.

On my RRS (same engine), with the ignition on, I get 150kpa fuel pressure.

What SHOULD I get (pressure wise) with JUST the ignition on?

Do you think that I might actually be lucky and find that it is the intank fuel pump that has failed?

Am I correct that the engine will not start if the low pressure pump has failed?

Thanks for your advice!!

Nick

My thoughts are that it may be the high pressure fuel pump belt that has snapped? You say it cut out on the motorway?signs do point to that..have you pulled the cover off to see?Could be lucky Thumbs Up

If you stand outside on the Right side of the car.

When you turn the ignition on, you should hear the fuel pump making strange noises for 30 seconds
Try it on your RRS and compare.

You can also measure the current at the fuel pump fuse to see if the pump works.

I will check when I get home.

Do you know which fuse it is, and what current I should get?

Also, should I not get some fuel pressure with the ignition turned on (if the low pressure pump is working)?

Thanks for the link!!

Sadly I don't have a pressure gauge.

The IID has a fuel pressure rail meter on it. On the RRS this shows pressure even with the engine off (just the ignition on). On the D3, I don't get any pressure measured on the IID (Even when cranking the engine).

Should I not at least get some pressure measure with the ignition on?

Just been out and tested mine. Ignition on engine off.

EDIT: There was no reading on the fuel rail pressure sensor

THANKS!!!!

Now I am slightly more confused!!

I have just tried disconnecting the fuel pipe, and turned the ignition on. Fuel was coming out.

I just felt the HP fuel pump belt... not snapped.

When I crank the engine, there is 120KPa pressure there, but as soon as I stop cranking, the pressure is gone.

Any ideas?

When I bought the car I kew that there was an engine problem, but I thought that it was the timing belt snapped. I haven't checked the main timing belt because I am still waiting for the fan removal tool to arrive (should arrive in the next few days).

What do you think... IF it were the timing belt snapped, would the engine crank normally. Would the I get any fuel pressure if timing belt had snapped (I am not sure where the HPFP gets its drive from).

I will add that when I crank the engine, it seems to be turning easily, and isn't making any horrid noises. I know that this could be because all the rocker cams are broken, but am I wrong in thinking that with a snapped timing belt it wouldn't crank normally?

I have also checked, and there are NO fault being registered!!

Any ideas?

Next weekend I will be checking the main timing belt and will know more, but it would be nice if I could avoid having to open all that up (the D3 is sitting in my garden at the moment, and it is raining).

There is a basic and less intrusive way of checking that the timing belt is still operating.... Take off the oil filler cap, and watch to see if the camshaft on that side is turning when cranking the engine either using the starter, or with a bar and socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt.

OK... just collected my daughter from scouts and got her to crank the engine while I was looking in through the oil filler hole.

Sadly.... no movement.

So, it seems the timing belt is broken (probably oil pump problem).

I will now be contacting LR to see if they will help. Otherwise I have a friend who will take the whole engine out, and then refurbish the engine.

Considering what I paid for her, it will still be cheap!!

I am not optimistic, but since the car has full service history from the landrover dealer right up until the time the belt went, it will be interesting to see.

I have only just bought it, and I knew that there was this risk, but if I can get a partial replacement engine from LR, then I would rather do that even if it costs slightly more.

I will certainly let you all know what they say. I am in the process of righting to them right now.

Have just sent an e-mail to CR Benelux. I will see what they say and update this post.

If you have just bought it can’t you return it and argue it had an inherent defect? I would imagine consumer protection laws in your jurisdiction are up to the task.
