Engine won't start

2005 TDV6 L319

Since I replaced the park brake shoes, I have had a suspension problem - RH rear sensor voltage out of range (C1A06-1C). I fitted a spare sensor - no change, the engine ran and all systems seemed to function normally. I still had the park brake indication warning light but the park brake worked.
I made the mistake of disconnecting the park brake module connector and reconnecting with power on. Now I can't start the engine and I am getting a lot of 'Lost Communication' messages that I can't clear with the GAP tool and the park brake won't operate. Could there be a damaged circuit board in the brake module causing a loss of HS CANbus to the downstream modules?

Current messages. U0001-87(Instrument pack), U0122-87 (Steering angle), U0122-87, U0100-87, U0101-87, U0128-87, U102-87, U1A13-87, U102-87, U1A13-87, U0136-87, U1A13-87(Suspension), B1D21-13(audio). These seem to me to point to a CANbus failure in the EPB module which is having an effect on all of the downstream modules. All of the system fuses check out as ok.
Next step remove the EPB module?
The C1A06-1C message isn't showing now. The -87 suffix seems common to most of the messages, what does it mean?
Any advice appreciated - Thanks

Could try a total reset. Remove both battery leads and short them together for 20 to 30 secs and see if that helps

I tried the hard reset a couple of times - no luck. I have also made sure that the battery is fully charged before using it. I have tried to clear the defects via the GAP tool several times with no success.

Of the messages and codes, the "U" are information so I would look at the "B" code and see what the problem is.

The code B1D21-13 is "Remote control switch-General electrical failure-circuit open" I'm not sure that relates to the rest of the messages which seems to me to indicate a HS CANbus failure.
The way these cars are wired up I wouldn't be surprised if the radio controls the park brake!

If you go to my gallery there is a HS Can bus diagram showing all connectors, pins and the flow of the bus.
check this link as it is a pdf you can print

Try a battery disconnect

If that doesn’t work, check you have power oat the handbrake connector.
Is it 2 green wires?

I know there was a mod at that cable can break

Where to next?? So far I've tried a spare instrument cluster and park brake module with no success, the same DTCs are logged.
I tried disconnecting the ABS electronic module - no change.
Am I missing a step when I try replacement units? Should there be a procedure to load the new unit into the system?
All of the DTCs that I'm getting are U prefixed, data communications codes.

Have you coded the instrument cluster to the vehicle?

It could just be a faulty relay under the bonnet.

Thanks Andrew, I have the cluster original instrument refitted now. I haven't tried any relays yet, but that's another avenue to chase.

Theres another similar thread that turned out to be a 70a relay under the bonnet. A number of the relays are the same type so can be swapped over to see if the problem changes

Yes that was me😳 try swapping the heated screen relay with the engine management relay. When I changed my batter last week I must have made a short to the relay. When I swapped the car fired with no problem. If it is that then make sure you order a new one as the heated windscreen relay is only 40a and you need the 70a one. Worth a try 👍

Some good news at last. I started from then back of the car, checking continuity on on the CAN circuit. Got to the E-diff and found that although the plug looked secure, it wasn't fully engaged. Cleaned the contacts, resealed a bodgy looking repair and then reconnected. This plug is in a real awkward position and required a liberal coating of colourful language to get it fully home. as I've been checking the circuit, I have checked the DTCs at each stage. After the diff connector most of the DTCs have gone, the engine now starts and the parkbrake works. Happy days - time to celebrate!
I still have the C1A71-1C (rear right height sensor supply fault) and the park brake indication fault, so things are getting better.
A further update - found a damaged connector on the height sensor which I replaced with a parts from the second machine, which I'm using as a parts donor. All suspension faults now cleared.
I still have the EPB fault light to clear.

Well done on the fault finding. Keep going and you will fix the last bits
