Engine tapping noise. Please help
Hi guys
3 weeks ago I bought myself a 2010 discovery 4 sdv6 commercial. At first it was perfect and i loved it but unfortunately there is now a problem with the engine. There's a tapping/knocking noise coming from the right hand bank of the engine. It sound like a hydraulic lifter tapping and it's louder if you remove the oil filler cap, it gets faster when you Rev the engine and doesn't go away if you drive it whether it's cold
Or hot. Has anyone had anything like this happen ? I really need a diagnosis so I can take it back to where it came from and try and make them rectify the situation !
Any information greatly appreciated !

I have no idea but would say take it back and let them diagnose it and sort it out.
A cheap mechs stethoscope of ebay may be a good start.

A couple of years ago i had a Disco 3 that developed a tapping noise - it sounded like a Shogun. Turns out the oil filter had been damaged on installation by a crap mechanic. Required 2 new pistons!

Hi guys, finally had a proper diagnosis from a specialist. They have told me that the turbo oil seals have gone meaning that oil got in the cylinders therefore cracking a piston and scoring the bores ! Apparently it's becoming a common problem on the 3.0 sdv6 engine... The repair bill currently stands at £16,600 !

Just three weeks
Me thinks whom ever sold that to you knew about it
Some chunky oil additive to quieten it down. Then sell it
Any comeback on the seller maybe "Track day running - Don't put your foot back on the accelerator until your absolutely sure you don't have to take it off again"
Current Ride: D4 XS Commercial Baltic Blue SDV6 fully loaded with heated everything
Track Days: BMW E36 M3 Evolution MY 1996 (3.2 Litre 377 BHP sat in 1,250 Kgs of car, with a pro safety cage and some serious braking power)

I have been assured that there is no way of knowing this is going to happen. Apparently it's just bad luck and can be caused by dirty oil or even the wrong oil. It did come with a warranty but I don't think The warranty company will cover the total amount so hopefully under the sales of goods act 1979 I should be able to get the seller to pay the rest of the money.... I'm ever hopeful !
