Engine System Fault

I started the car this morning after a 5/6 day lay up.

I got engine system fault almost straight way, I’ve got no smoke and it seems to rev ok but when I take it for a drive it has no power till approx 2-2500 rpm then the turbo kicks in and it shoots off.

Does this sound like an actuator fault? It’s been driving fine but does do it’s fair share of town driving with my wife.

Cars a 54 plate auto tdv6.

Sounds more like an EGR issue

Turbo actuator corroded or sticking would cause it to drop into limp mode normally

Would blocked egr give me smoke or anything?

When my Turbo actuator was sticking it was going into limp mode as soon as it needed to utilise the turbo

EGRs are in use at lower revs and will probably need blanking

Any other issues like the smoke from a challenger tank on Salisbury plain ?

Can be easily blanked to test with a couple of 2p pieces to see if it resolves the issue

No smoke at all, the engine system fault displays as soon as the car starts, it’s got me stumped because it was fine when last used.

EGRs don't normally block, but get stuck and cause recirculation airflow when its not needed therefore giving odd throttle response and really flat performance

Don't let someone take the pipes off though as used to be part of the solution as this will cause you problems at MOT test

Split in the intercooler hose would normally give you a lot of smoke (Grey whitish smoke like a WW2 Battleship laying down a defensive smokescreen) and iffy performance due to the additional air coming into the intake side

normally the car will throw a hissy fit and go into limp mode if the actuator is sticking on the turbo when you are getting it under load, such as going uphill swiftly or anything that is exercising the turbo mechanism to adjust the vane positions

As it threw an error at low revs and will rev eventually I would suggest either the EGRs or another cause such as a sensor

How does it tickover? is it running rough at low revs?

Ticks over fine, perhaps revs are slightly delayed but couldn’t be certain.

I would guess its down to one of the EGRs but will be interested to hear how you get on

The car doesn't really monitor their operation at that age so they are easy to blank, as I mentioned earlier they can be temporarily blanked with a couple of 2 pence pieces, so for 4 pence you can try and see if it improves the situation, if it does then order a blanking kit to resolve the issue.

Its a bit of a fan to do it so if it was me I would just blank them and remove the butterfly to remove the issue for the future and as a by product you get a bit of a performance boost and some people say a slight mpg improvement

Cheers I’ll look into how to get at them now.

Is this where I would place the 2p?

Do I still have to remove the butterfly from the air box end of the egr? Or can I temp fit the 2p, leave the butterfly valve in and see if that resolves my issue?

sorry can't see picture as I'm on a train, but the 2 p fits into the hole in between the pipework and the top of each egr - this is just a temporary measure until you fit a proper blanking kit but will show you if its the cause of the problem

yeah you could leave the butterfly there to test it.

I see the picture now - thats from the BAS blanking kit instruction Smile

You are basically just blowing off the airflow through to the pipes you can do with a 2 p or cut some shim to shape and fit in - there are egr blanks that have slots instead of holes for the two bolts, so you only need to loosen the bolts and slide in the blanking plates into the space whilst the EGR pipes are still in place then retighten up

the butterfly is at the intersection near the two egr pipes at the top of the butterfly housing - this can be removed later once you are happy that the problem is resolved.

Ironically my wife has just called me as she is picking me up at the station and says the car was very sluggish on the roundabout on the way to the station - looks like I'll be getting tools out tonight when I get home as well Smile
