Engine oil leak. What's this?
Hi, I ve done engine oil service on father s 3l diesel disco 4 annually. I am noticing a worsening g leak near sump plug, which is replaced each time. I think the leak comes from this black hose which goes into the sump.
On right of photo.
Any ideas what it is?

I had exactly the same problem, I think it is the other end of the pipe used to suck oil out when changed by a main stealer, I reseated mine by pressing the release catch on the connector and half pulling the connector back off then on again a couple of times, it seems to have stopped it.
I just wonder how many more are leaking here as it is not necessary now to take the sump guard off to check when the oil is changed the idle vacuum way and the sump guard doubles as an excellent drip tray.
If this connector should come off whilst travelling and LRs wonderful none early low oil warning system its new engine time
I did think about plugging mine as it will never be used while I own the vehicle.
It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Thanks,
That is useful info.
Yes, I heard that the dealer dipstick is actually for sucking oil out.
That method must leave some sludge in engine.
As you said removing sump guard allows a look around for potential leaks.
My brothers Range Rover suffered a catastrophic coolant leak then vaporized the engine oil in a few minutes. Engine was a write off. This is a 2015 model with 3500 miles on clock. Warranty repair. 10months old.

I will contact dealer parts dept and find out more details about replacement. It has a plastic button on a plastic elbow and did slide over a metal tube going into sump. I replaced its position and locked it back. Looks like a disaster waiting to pop off to be honest. I can't understand why LR didn't just use a metal elbow to rubber hose.

LR dealer confirmed that it is the scavenger pipe for drawing oil out.
Said they had no issues with it popping off.

Sludge from where? Didn't someone on here take the sump plug out after sucking the engine oil out and nothing more drained out?
