Engine not running smoothly, multiple misfires.

I have a 2005 LR3/Disco 3 with 135,000 miles. A few days ago I noticed it was running strangely after I started it, the car was shaking and it didn't sound right. After a few minutes it flashed a warning saying "Reduced Engine Performance" or something close to that. I pulled in and switched off the engine. I let it sit for about 10 minutes and then started again and it seemed to be running smoothly and I continued to my destination.

After a few hours I started the car to head back home and it was running rough again. After a minute the check engine light came on and the reduced performance warning came on again. It also was telling me that my Tailgate was open but when I checked it was closed tight. I managed to nurse the car home.

When I got home I got my basic engine scanner and I had the following 8 codes:
P0300 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0304 - Cylinder #4 Misfire Detected
P0305 - Cylinder #5 Misfire Detected
P0316 - Engine Misfire Detected on Startup (First 1000 Revolutions)
P0300pd
P0304pd
P0305pd
P0316pd

I am currently out of town but will be home tomorrow and I want to have as much info as I can get before I start diagnosing the problem. I already have spark plugs so I will change them to eliminate the simple things.

I read that it could be a capacitor or coil packs. Is there anything else I should check?

is it a V8 or a V6?
Did you replace your spark plugs at 90,000 miles or at 10 years?

Oh sorry, I have the V8. I was told the spark plugs were changed when I bought the car with 81,000 miles but you never know if that was true or not, that's why I will replace them regardless.

Thanks for the idea geoffsnook. I'll do that as well and report back tomorrow.

So I just finished changing all the spark plugs. The ones I removed all looked pretty good, no unusual burn marks etc. I also swapped the cylinder number 2 coil pack with cylinder number 4 and swapped the cylinder number 5 coil pack with the cylinder number 3 coil pack.

I started the car and went for a very short test drive. It was still running rough and after I started to accelerate on the road the check engine light came on. I came home, ran the scanner and got the following codes:

P0300 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0303 - Cylinder #3 Misfire Detected
P0307 - Cylinder #7 Misfire Detected
P0316 - Engine Misfire Detected on Startup (First 1000 Revolutions)

So the misfire followed the coil pack from cylinder 5 to cylinder 3 but a new misfire happened on cylinder 7 and no misfire from the coil pack the was moved from cylinder 4 to cylinder 2.

Any further suggestions other than to start replacing coil packs?

Do you know a friend who has another V8 Disco, who would let you swap bits to try before buying them?

Not many V8 experts here I'm afraid.

Unfortunately the only other person I knew with one sold it earlier in the year. I found a breaker yard selling the coil packs for $25 each so I think I will buy 4 of them and see how it goes. Better than $110+ for a new one.

This is just a stab in the dark but have you thought of the PCV valve? Swapping it doesn’t cost much but if it’s blocked it can lead to really funky and obscure faults.

Yes I did. It turned out it was just 1 coil pack that was causing the issue. For some reason it would also cause another coil pack to not work correctly.

Thank you Fusion158,
I have solved it already, also turned out to be a spark plug coil.
I was away for few days and once I got back, I used my IIDtool there was misfire on 4 and 5.
I cleared the faults and let the engine run for few minutes, p0300 and p0305 came back. Also cleared and again p0305 came back.
I switched coil 5 with 7, cleared and then p0307 showed. So it was fairly easy.
The reason it shows 2 cylinders sometimes is because the of the firing order 1-2-7-3-4-5-6-8.

Hope this helps and thank you again.

Cheers
