Engine earth strap

Does anyone know if it’s acceptable to replace the body to engine earth with one from the battery negative to the top engine hoist point? I can’t see where the original is meant to bolt onto the engine - looks like a 🐷 to get to.

Yea iI can’t see where it goes on the engine. Even from underneath on a ramp. Looks like a starter motor off maybe.

It is a pig to change, but possible through the wheelarch with actually very little disassembly. It's better with the suspension lifted, but for christ sake get some axle stands and jack tight under the chassis and remove the fuse as you'll have your hands in a perilous place if the suspension drops.

The worst bit is getting one of the bolts back in at the bottom and starting it in it's thread with fingers outstretched to their limit.

I did mine by supergluing the bolt to the end of my finger so I didn't need to use two fingers on it.
It made it a much easier, but you do of course lose a small amount of skin.

I’ve got it on a ramp with wheel arch liner off snd still can’t see where it was supposed to attach. I can refit it on the wheel arch fittings and see where it wants to be on the engine but l can’t see anything it would fit to. I would normally expect an earth to go to a bell housing or starter/alternator bolt.

On mine it was obvious because the bit that boke off was still attached.

I believe there are some images on here somewhere.

That would be fine and exactly how mine is fixed although originally was meant to be a temporary fix Rolling with laughter two years ago!

Mine was a preventative measure just in case the original cable 'let go'
Here are a series of photos of my cable install...

^ doesn't always work. Bracket needs a good contact to the cylinder head (paint removed first) and same again where the terminal is bolted to the bracket Thumbs Up
