Engine cuts out when the disco is moving along the road |
|
I have a 2012 D4 HSE with 27000 miles on the clock. Driving along towing a caravan there was a very short incident as if I had run across a trench in the road (which I had not). A couple of minutes later the engine died and as I came to a stop the engine had cut out and the gearbox had moved to "park". This happened again a couple of minutes later. After each event the engine started easily. I then drove for another 70 miles or so when the engine faltered for a second and then returned to normal and I got home OK. I have read the fault code and it says "P0001 fuel volume regulator control- open circuit" Can anyone give me some advice please on what I can do to locate and correct the fault?

im not saying it is, but our D4 has just been dropped to LR with a plausible signal from the crank sensor, a few reported a slight hesitation prior with a fuel pressure fault code registering.
Worth a read here to see if yours could be early stages of that failing?

Steve,
Thank you for that. The term hiccup/jolt describes very well what happened to mine, but when the engine cut out there were no warning lights. However, my VIN falls just inside the range quoted on Topix. My D4 was registered September 2012 and so is now out of warranty but it has only done 27000 miles. Is yours still under warranty? If not will Landrover make a contribution towards the repair?

Ours was June 2012 registered so is also out of warranty, it's currently sat at Southend LR waiting a diagnostic check before we get anything further from LRCS but I have told them following that thread and the fact they have fixed the car FOC I expect the same

Interesting this thread and the other one mentioned. Mine is March 2012 registered with 59k miles and is currently at the dealers having the crankshaft sensor and trigger being replaced as it cut out on Monday morning in Lane 2 of the M4! (I was on the way to the dealer to have the MOT done). Fortunately I extended the warranty with Warranty Direct and their covering it. D5 2017 HSE Lux

I went for a short drive today and at around the 10 mile point I got the hiccup/jolt and within a short distance the engine cut out and the power steering etc went, luckily I was only going slowly at the time. Driving home the same happened again but, this time a warning message was displayed to say that the HDC was not operating. So with a back up escort I took the car to the local LR dealership for investigation. I now wait to hear from them.

did you read the fault codes prior to dropping it off?
We dropped into Beadles @ southend sat pm, our car was sat out the front where it was dropped im told and hasnt moved since tuesday. They said they have had 3 cars all in on recovery this week alone and are very busy and will hopefully do a diagnostic by weds. enroute home we stopped @ Audi for a Q7 test drive as having second thoughts and while we are there someone comes in says can someone have a quick look at my car as the engine light has come on, so the service guy takes his keys, drives into the workshop and hooks it up for diagnostics!!!!!!!!!! 10 mins later they return and chat to them about the codes showing...... CS will be getting a call shortly as LR service is shocking TBH.

It strikes me that this is not just about inconvenience and cost ( for those without a warranty), its also a safety issue. There is a post elsewhere where the owner ended up in a ditch albeit at a relatively slow speed. In the circumstances shoudnt LR be recalling potentially affected vehicles for inspection? Perhaps this requires affected owners to draw attention to the issue with DVLA! There is an online form on the Recall section of the DVLA website linking to a form entitled " Report a Vehicle Safety Defect online".

Just to add, LR have seen fit to issue a safety recall on 2015 DS and evoques because the " vehicle may cut out".
Defect Details
An engine harness may not have been routed correctly during assembly. This may chafe and cause engine malfunction. In extreme cases the engine may cut out.
So why not Discos affected by the crankshaft sensor/ trigger wheel problem? D4 GS 12MY

I still maintain the car is different after the crankshaft sensor repair. Less mpg and clunker gearbox and that's after three thousand miles. I'd take it back - no doubt get the, "it's fine, it's your imagination" bit, but as it's being part ex'd on Friday, it won't be my problem.

I did not get to read the fault codes. I was getting messages flashed up both on the sat nav screen and the screen between the rev counter & speedo. From memory the messages were mainly to say that special programmes had been cancelled and something like to drive with care! The problem happened a few miles away from home and I was more interested in getting the car in for investigation as quickly as possible. The dealer has been in touch asking about the symptoms and saying that although they are busy they will treat it as a breakdown and will start their investigation as soon as they can (although to date was specified)

had a call from LRCS this morning, diagnosis is done but didnt advise me what the problem was as they are waiting a report from Beadles.... Sounds like they are willing to assist with the repair but wont commit until the report is available.

I finally got my D4 back from the dealership yesterday after 3 1/2 weeks waiting to be repaired. At one point I almost sent it a get well soon card! Nevertheless I am grateful to the forum for being able to find out useful information, to Steve who first alerted me to the problem with crank angle sensors and to Ryan at Landrover who arranged for the repair to be done FOC. It helped has to restore my faith in Landrover somewhat.Thank you to all concerned.
