Three questions for you.
1. Have you fitted the modified oil pump? 2. Can you hear a rattling sound when you start from cold until the oil light extinguishes? How long does it take for the oil light to extinguish?
To be honest that sounds to me like the timing chain / tensioners are rattling.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

The indi in the UK said the pump didn't need changing and that was three years ago when they did the belts. So no it has not been changed in my ownership.
The oil light is about 3 to 4 seconds

If you are running with the original D3 oil pump you are driving a time bomb! The original pump must be changed for the later modified but original FoMoCo pump.
If your car has covered 150,00 miles/240,000 kms the pump needs changing anyway, regardless of whether it's the modified type or not! In my opinion they have a useable service life of 150,000 miles maximum, and very often start to loose pressure before reaching this mileage.
I would further suggest your timing chain tensioners are suspect, but without actually seeing the car it's difficult at this remove to give you a precise diagnosis.
So I'll say this, change the oil pump and the cam chains and tensioners. You will need new timing belt kit as well, but you don't need a new engine or a rebuild as you previously thought!
What mileage is on the car now?yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

OK so in my mind that's new oil pump time, especially as you are still running the original.
If you're going to keep it change the oil pump and get the chains and tensioners done as well, they are known to snap!
All in, with a new set of belts, cam chains, tensioners, oil pump, gaskets, valve lifters, bits and bobs, it will be a fraction of the cost of fitting a new engine!
And, it will be like new!yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

No it won’t it will have worn out shells main and big end with the potential to start knocking and crack the crank.
It needs an oil pump and timing chains for sure

Is it worth replacing the shells on high mileage engines as preventative maintenance (That are still running well) before it causes a major problem, such as damaging the block or crank?
I'm sure its common practice on the BMW M engines, when they get up around 80k mileage.

Any TDV6 has the potential to let go on the bottom end even low mileage ones, but not every D3 spins it's bearings or snaps it's crank. The vast majority of them suffer no issues in this regard, but it is a wise preventative measure. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ
In order to avoid the import charges etc, could you not trailer the car to the ferry terminal, drive it onto the ferry and arrange for transport on the other side to pick it up when the ferry has landed? That way the car would just be visiting the UK and not being imported. Coming back you could fly over and drive the car back.
Not sure if this will help.2013 RR Vogue SE SDV8

It’s these kind of threads and replies that put me off spending anymore money on my D3. It’s on 203,000 and runs well - however, with the possibilities highlighted of things to go wrong, I’m in a frame of mind of just driving it until it dies and save my pocket from chasing preventative things past oils and filters.Defender 110 2.4 TDCi Utility Station Wagon.
Aside from the legality of importing items undeclared, how do I claim the UK VAT back and put the invoice through the business?
Surely it's just a repair done whilst using the car for business?.
