Engine bottom end rattling TDV6 3.0 |
|
Engine noise after oil overfill, and short drive. What would you expect to be cause of the rattling? Not viewed the car, just going by sellers description. Chris

Walk away .............

Depending on how much over, if it's been run for more than just a few seconds mucho damage can occur.
Humble opinion and all that.

Evidently a serious problem. Seller says he paid £11k for the car less than six months ago. It was at a garage for new brake pads, and they added the excess oil. Rattling noticeable after one mile, then vehicle recovered by truck, but the damage is done!
Allowing £3k for a used engine and parts, which I can fit, the car would be an interesting proposition at around £2k. It is eleven years old, so possibly other problems as well. Chris

It probably “rattled” before the oil was added and the “extra” oil was added in an attempt to quieten the knock, keep walking unless you really want to buy a lot of work and have the expertise, equipment and premises to do it. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

They only want £2K for it ? Ought to be worth more than that stripped and sold as parts ... must be a load more wrong with it than the rattling engine, IMHO.

At £2k, if the rest of looks OK, I would definitely go for it.
But then I have a 2 post lift to raise the body, not sure I would go for a used engine though. I would strip and assess the engine expecting it to be scrap, at worst it's a new engine, but then you know there's no worries on that score.

You might have guessed this is in an auction.

Considering the current price (£2k) and opinions here, I am losing interest. Although I have a workshop and two post lift, experience has taught me that restoring a broken Discovery to good health always consumes more time and money than anticipated. Chris

Plus you would a fair cost of recovery from Hereford to Usk.
£2k with 3 days to go, I might keep an eye on that, but on ebay recently spares and repairs always seems to fetch more than you can do a decent repair and not end up spending more than if you'd just bought a decent runner in the first place. 1994 Defender 300tdi 110 commercial
