Engine area (speed related) noise problem
Just started to get this ...
At any revs, in or out of gear, I am hearing a noise that reminds me of a modern electric drill (at low revs)
The pitch of this noise goes up and down with engine revs.
Turned off all heating, AC etc but noise persists.
The noise is audible from within the car and very audible (over engine noise) with windows open
I've got no warning lights nor does the performance of the car seem to be affected.
Friend of mine (doesn't know JS about Land Rovers though) says it sounds 'like an alternator' noise - whatever that might be
Anyone got a clue? Don't want to put it into dealer this week as have a 4-day event to attend...

If it seems to be worse around the O/S wheel arch, then alternator, if it seems to be worse between the engine & radiator, then possibly FEAD belt tensioner or PS pump

Iain, could this be one of the causes of the noise you heard when you test drive mine ?

nope, yours was only whilst in motion - is it still there or did re-seating the gear lever gasket sort it?

A/C compressor bearing ? Mine went, made noise (revs related whining) even with A/C off and stationary. There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

Thanks Iain -- in your opinion, is this something that needs urgent or could it be left until next week -- or is something drastically going to fail and leave me stranded somewhere ?
