Electronic Parking Brake unit replacement |
|
Parking brake warning light came on a few days ago and the system failed to work. Luckily it's off, rather than stuck on. Car is a 2005 Disco 3 HSE.
Took it to local independent LR specialist to check over and they said that power is getting to the fuses, so likelihood is that there's a problem further along with the wiring or it's the unit itself that needs replacing. Worst case scenario is unit replacement, because cost is going to be approximately £1100 (with about £700 of that for the unit itself)!
I know this will have been covered somewhere here before, but cannot find it, so apologies for missing it, but what I'm interested in finding out is whether anyone has experience of the online services that offer to refurbish the unit for about £150 plus postage. Is it the way to go, or is a new unit the best option?
Cheers, Darren

Do a search on here. Various things that can go wrong and be fixed yourself quite simply. You can get new cables for less than £100 and fit them to the car with the unit in situ (I did one last weekend).
With a diagnostic tool you can DIY fit the whole unit easily with pretty basic mechanic skills.

and there is a forum code with 5% off, which is worth having.
You'd swap one in a few hours, even a day taking it very steady.

Thanks for your reply Apache. I've read through several posts about EPB issues, but cannot see any where where the poster says he or she has had the unit refurbished. I was really just wondering if a refurbished unit is considered worthwhile by those who have had it done.
I think I'd struggle to replace the unit myself, partly because of lack of skills and also necessary tools. There's also a space issue, so it's not really a route open to me, unfortunately.
I suppose I might just be lucky and when the garage gets it on the lift they discover it isn't the unit that is the problem, but the wiring or something else. But if it is the unit, I need to think of what to do, as a £1100 bill might mean it's just not worth it.
Cheers, Darren
