Unfortunately, during some vigorous off-roading, my EPB died. So I have a couple of questions for all of you more knowledgable folk out there...
1. I have seen reconditioning services for the EPB but I understand that getting the old one out at the least needs a ramp and lots of time, neither of which I have. If I go to a garage to get the old one removed, is the car subsequently drivable until a new one gets put in?
2. Is it sensible to buy a 2nd-hand one of these, or is there a good chance it could be a lemon or go after a few thousand miles more? What's the average life of an EPB?

After off roading, its recommended to reset the EPB brake shoes, maybe that's all that's required.

While I was applying the EPB on a rather steep hill there was a grinding/whirring type noise, which I assume was the actuator, and the EPB engaged and refused to disengage. Rather stupidly (and because I was in the middle of nowhere) I carried on driving, until the smell of burning convinced me otherwise. I pulled the manual release and now the EPB doesn't do anything. Presumably this is because the cable has wound off it's spool or something and would need the whole thing taken out anyway to sort ?
