electricians.....
I'm not going to go into the whole sorry saga, but suffice to say that our electrician who was supposed to be wiring up our downlights wanted everything in cash and didn't want to issue a certificate. When pushed (by paying half the money with the rest when he returned with the certificate), he came back but disconnected the switches and was last seen beetling off down the drive.
So we're currently without downlights or kitchen lights, but have found a friendly soul (at least they seem so on the phone) who is popping over tomorrow to make safe and fix a basic lighting setup (SWMBO crying on the phone helped there, I think). And we do have a story to tell for the Christmas table, I guess.....
Some people, huh?!

You're lucky, our original electrician wouldn't delay the start of the work by one day on re-wiring our kitchen and as he left my wife in tears said the earliest he'd be back was March. We managed to find one, eventually, but he's only done the first fix and the plasterers only finished yesterday. So the kitchen we planned to have installed on the 27th November is currently in storage awaiting the New Year.

When we had the kitchen done the electrician breezed in looked around and announced that an extra 30amp point needed fixed in one corner in addition to the existing one diagonally opposite. He stormed upstairs to check the orientation of the joists of the kitchen ceiling to run the cable from the consumer unit in the garage and down into the corner for installation. He suddenly looked a bit perplexed when he saw that access to the under floor was a bit difficult due to a ply lining under the fitted carpet and well-stocked bookcases on top.
Ah, problem solved he announces, I'll come through from the garage into the hall cupboard, chase the ceiling over to the corner.
I thought it better to interrupt at this point and direct his attention to the corner and to the existing 30amp point already there. Oh says he a bit deflated, you already have two 30amp points. Numpty!
Apart from that he did a good job.2014 MY Discovery XS Indus Silver. Sadly gone. Second last LR of forty eight years continuous ownership.

update: we texted him to say his services were no longer needed - he texted back to say he's a Buddhist and so hopes we use the other half of the money against the "bad karma" that is coming our way. SWMBO got the text and felt threatened by it, but I'm currently of the view that he's just an idiot and meant that from his Buddhist perspective (though one that wishes bad karma on people is a new form of aggressive Budist ). But did contemplate calling the cops.
Think it'll die away though and that's easier than escalation. Sending the boys round might once have been an option, but were too old for that now. Did wonder about signing his phone up to PPI checking though.....

Is he registered with any scheme such as NICEIC, STROMA, NAPIT etc? Sounds very much like he's unregistered with any scheme or HMRC...De-Tango

yes, think he'll be reported. The deal was half the money now, half when he brings the certificate, which seemed reasonable to me. Hey ho.
He is registered - saw a card - but not sure which institution. Will check it all out after Christmas. Am debating whether to chase my £200 or write it off as too much hassle, but trying not to get out of the Christmas spirit over it. Am sure he feels hard done by and slighted (by my completely unreasonable behaviour in wanting him to certify he work he's done..... ) He probably did do about £200 of work, just, so think I'll stick with the moral high ground.....

Even if he is a member of one of the schemes it is probably not worth the effort of reporting him as they don't take any action unless they are severely provoked and forced into it"Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag'em down to your level. It's cheaper".

SWMBO sent back a (mollifying) text which said that, reflecting on his message to her, she was sorry he felt hard done by, but that the difference of perspective was real and unlikely to be easily sorted. But that she felt threatened by his insinuation of "bad karma" coming to her, and would he clarify what he meant as it seems like a direct threat..... If she doesn't receive a reply by the morning, she plans to report it to the police.
Sound to me like he makes it look like he is registered at his end but that none of the official bodies know anything about him.
The local council department the used to be called "Trading Standards" are probably the people most likely to be interested in his status.
The "no certificate", not even a fake, suggests he knows something is not right with the work done.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill.
