This is quite a good explanation of the CAN BUS.

You really need to retain this function to meet modern requirements (essential or legislative).

With a D3/D4 conversion the Main ECU for the engine may (possibly) be retained to manage the motor however other nodes of the system would defiantly be retied and would need to be reprogrammed.

So the security, safety, traction, radio, HVAC etc would be retained .. there is a company in the Netherlands who can custom write the required communications. You also need to think about things like limiting the initial torque when you press the fast pedal. a LR is tough but i could imagine that 'instant full torque' from a big hunking A/C induction motor like the one developed for the new Fort Transit EV (Siemens IPV5135-4W514) might very well break, or twist a drive shaft!

Yip.. I enjoyed it.. Not sure I would know where to start with it mind you... I can just about remember programming in basic on an Aim65 and BBC Micro... I remember being excited when RISC (reduced Instruction set command) was introduced.. Rolling with laughter I am one of the old gits who saw an advert in Practical Electronics magazine (printed on real paper!) an spent £99 (IIRC) to buy a load of parts to build a Sinclair Z80 Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter then spent HOURS typing in code to find it did not work.. Big Cry

So I have some very basic (oops a pun) knowledge, but in a way the CAN BUS system relies on a simple approach. It is also a code that can be accessed and rewritten etc.. so it is a bit of a black art, however there are a fair number of companies who are VERY good at doing this.. I can imagine if i get my act together GAP could be a good starting point.. I can only see converting more modern Land rovers as a positive. It will help keep many on the road that currently destined for the scrap yard. Engine failure appears to be the single biggest reason that more modern Land rovers end up being scrapped. Simple economics... ie if the engine blows its simply not worth repairing given the time and money involved... its simply cheaper to purchase a replacement vehicle..

I have been doing a lot of research and it is very clear that 'classic' ie Pre CAN BUS vehicles are much simpler to convert to electric. however things are progressing at a rapid rate.. so I am sure that I am not the only person that is thinking about a 100% EV Disco/RR etc..

If you do not fancy trying to convert a Disco to 100% EV you could always buy a Bollinger.... very Discovery like vehicle... I rather like it.. it already has a lot of pre-orders as it less prissy than a Tesla SUV and more practical. Personally I like it and would have one over a Rivian any day (if money was not a consideration)

It can tow 6 tonnes!
And does 0 to 60mph in 4.5 seconds Bow down

They are planning Right hand drive for the UK and Australia...

the good news is that it looks like the concept will become a reality. Love or hate the looks it will shake up the market a bit... Many years ago I was in a meeting where a major UK grocer derided, laughed at and generally dismissed Aldi and Lidl.. NOW all the major retailers are looking at Lidl/Aldi type concepts to move their business forward and the two 'bargain basement' stores have a reasonable share of the UK market...

As more EV companies and tech come on to the market it will make the availability and practicality home conversions become more of a reality

I love the RR classic conversion...
