Electric starting problem |
|
Right I seem to be having a strange electrical problem, its happend to me 4 times now.
The last instance of it was Friday, I was sat in the car with the engine off listening to the radio when all of a sudden there is a ping, HDC fault appears on the screen and the little red alarm light flashes, when I turn the ignition the vehicle will not start.
It almost acts like the battery has run flat.
When I jump start the vehicle it starts straight away and then I can switch the vehicle off and it will restart again with no issues?
I've been able to replicate the fault by removing and replacing any connector in the vehicle, it almost seems like a panic feature of the electronics in the vehicle
Any ideas

The car draws a lot of current with the engine off as all the systems are powered up. A lot of people flatten their battery when washing the car with the car stereo on. Now driving BMW 330d Touring....misses D3...but not when at traffic lights

Seems alot of current if it can run a battery as far down as that, will have a look at the current it draws

ISTR it's 20-30amps with the electrickery on (i.e. radio & car 'awake') so will soon flatten your battery Bodsys Brake Bible

Just measured the start up current, it tops around 32Amps
Then drops to around 27/24 Amps with the radio on.
however with a 825A battery I would think I'd be seeing a problem for a good 25 hours or so? However I've never really been hot on vehicle electrics.
It might point to a poo battery though

Sticks, 825 is the power available to crank the engine (CCA rating), not the battery capacity. The std D3 battery is about 85Ah, so 3 hours is max based on your figures and even that's based on 100% efficiency which you would never get out of a battery. Bodsys Brake Bible

Ok I misread the Ah rating thought it was the 825 hence why I couldn't quite understand the loss of power.
However 85Ah makes far more sence and also answers my question
Just need to remember to leave the engine running when sat waiting for things
