EGR Emulator - Questions
Hi all,
My vehicle is:
2008 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE A 2.7ltr
I have an EML on and using my cheap diagnostic tool I get the error code P0495C which I think relates to the EGR valves. Coupled with this, the car seems to be in "limp" mode as can't get any power out of it.
I have the following questions regarding Emulators:
Is an emulator a absolute alternative to replacing the EGR valves?
Where to buy them?
Do they work reliably?
How much do they cost?
How easy are they to fit?
Is any software upgrade/update required and how is this done and at what cost?
Will it affect the MOT in any way?
I have read various posts on the subject but thought it may be useful to have all the answers in a single post for me and others that may follow.
Any further relevant info would also be appreciated.
Thanks in advance2015 Discovery 4 HSE

I have the same age and spec of vehicle.
Rather than an emulator, I fitted a blanking kit - one plate at each egr valve, and another plate on each side of the throttle butterfly housing. The pipes are removed altogether.
The throttle buttergly needs to be removed. I withdrew thee spindle, took out the butterfly, replaced the spindle and re-connected the actuator (just in case removing this might throw up error messages)
I then used my IID tool to install a software patch from BAS.
It has worked perfectly since, although the MOT isnt until January. I have kept all the pipes I removed, just in case the MOT inspector notices they're missing, and insistes on them being replaced.New gearbox & TC, 3 x front wheel bearings, belts changed, new oil pump, new battery, new rear prop, new front prop, new front diff, front arb refurbed, front cv boot kit, egr blank and BAS software patch, full rear suspension / drivelive rebuild, new front arms, LED trailer light fix, split charge.
Never had a 107, 90 or 127, but have had most of the rest!

I think its neater to blank & patch the ecu @£200
rather than having extra bits under the bonnet to deal with, that could break.

Thanks for your input gents.
Been speaking to BAS (https://bellautoservices.co.uk/) via a chat window and have been advised that I would need to buy an IID tool + patch + blanks at a cost of £510.50 + vat (£612.60) delivered.
I have been quoted by a local LR specialist (not main dealer) £675 (inc VAT & parts) to sort the job. This option does not require me to spend hours is in the cold scraping my knuckles so I think i'll go with that.
If I already owned the IID tool it would appear to be a no brainer as I think the patch only costs around £150 + VAT
Although I'm not going down this route there will doubtless be other unfortunate souls with the same issue that might benefit from any further info you guys can add.

I could be wrong here, but Im sure Ive read the later cars ie like yours can just have the blank kit fitted, yes the eml comes on but doesnt effect how it drives etc, might be worth a bit more research?
The blank kits themselves are peanuts from ebay and for the price surely got to be worth a try? plus might save yourself 600 quid.
- Find someone to apply the EGR patch instead. Geoff (geoff.) or Bodsy would be your nearest forum sponsors, though sadly neither is on your doorstep. Any other BAS or Alive dealer in your area could also do it (Alive have a map showing dealers in King's Lynn and Halesworth but can't say re BAS).
- See if a willing forum member nearby would be happy to lend a hand with the banking.
You do have to be careful with the software patch because there are planty of bad ones going around that entail deleting a bunch of fault codes - unnecessary, crude and unadvisable. Something to bear in mind, if you buy an IID tool, it will be very useful for many other applications, not just installing the patch.
And they command reasonable second hand values when you no longer need them.New gearbox & TC, 3 x front wheel bearings, belts changed, new oil pump, new battery, new rear prop, new front prop, new front diff, front arb refurbed, front cv boot kit, egr blank and BAS software patch, full rear suspension / drivelive rebuild, new front arms, LED trailer light fix, split charge.
