EGR COOLER ???
My Stealth Bomber has gone to the Doctors today to have an EGR valve replaced
A phone call from the dealers this afternoon revealed that the EGR Cooler is also faulty and needs replacing
So my question is, WTF is a EGR Cooler, I have never seen any mention of them on here.
And they haven't got any in stock so I will have to wait until tomorrow before my baby returns home Member of the carrot crank club

The EGR cooler is a heat exchanger. It cools down the exhaust gasses before they re-enter the combustion chamber. It's all about keeping those emmisions low

If you have a look at photos of the EGR the cooler is attached to it.
So the gases from the exhaust pass through the cooler then the EGR and back into the air intake.

How do they determine that the egr cooler is faulty ????????? could that mean they crossthreaded the bolts holding the egr valve on perhaps????? i dont know anything Im only only poking for clues......
Unless it was fixed under warranty, I would ask to see the 'failed' cooler. It might leak internally, but i've never heard of one doing that before.Previously:

It's not that uncommon that they fail - the usualy fail mode is cracking. Usually cause a loss in coolant and sometimes a bit of white smoke, but also (if leaking internally) ends up knackering the EGR valve that it's connected to.
It happened to one of the chaps here in Spain last week and many more have had the EGR coolers replaced for coolant loss problems before the valves are affected.
It's just stuck on the input (rear end) of the EGR valve and looks like a cylinder with loads of holes lengthways through it and coolant connections.2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

Thanks for the answers and yes it was repaired under Land Rovers finest
Mrs Frapp done the honours of picking it up which means that I havn't driven it yet but she says it's fine
A big 10/10 for MJFews at Gloucester for mending it again and for the courteous manner in which Mrs Frapp was served by them.
And they cleaned it Member of the carrot crank club
