Ahh....got ya
So this means that EGRs probably weren't necessary to comply with EURO III, but they are definitely needed for EURO IV compliance.
This could be why they need to produce fault messages if they fail on a EURO IV (>= MY07) engine.

Yep as I understand it I can't remove the actual EGR Valve from 07MY> as the ECU will fault. I believe Pete at BAS is working on a plug in connector to fool the ECU into thinking they are still there.

Has anyone successfully removed and cleaned the EGR valves. I've done it on other vehicles and it's cleared fault codes but as the D3's valves are less accessible I'm wondering if its worth the trouble

Didnt shinymoose take one appart?
On my 55 plate one, i didnt remove the EGR's, just blanked them off, and then took the link out from the butterfly actuator and fixed the butterfly open, so all the electrickery still worked, just didnt do anything, so therefore even on a later model, shouldnt throw up any faults.

Lee - thats the problem, as when they are stuck open all the exhaust crap is recirculated back into the inlet tract - you wouldnt know if they were stuck shut.

It seems the problem isn't that they get coked up with carbon, but more likely due to corrosion and or bearing failure. On the back of the EGR valve assembly there's a position sensor, so the ECU will record a fault if the position doesn't match where it's supposed to be. IIRC, on 07MY onwards this will cause the ECU light to come on, but not on earlier vehicles.Previously:

What he said. All EU4 engines legally must have the EML come on if there is a fault with the emission control system My D3 Build Thread

EGR's were definitely faulty - now blanked. Seperate issue was an intercooler hose which had de-laminated internally and was sapping power. All now corrected by Bell Autos and running like a dream! See seperate post here....
