effing glow plugs
really naffed off!!! I thought whilst the body's off I would replace glow plugs, so after nearly a week of daily soaking of plusgas set about the task, clockwise a little first to break the seal then anticlockwise then forwards, backwards, forwards and backwards a little at a time, bit nervy hearing the creaks of the rotation but promising then snap, the same on all 6. why they would start to to come out and then seize I don't understand. So extractor set ordered and hope I have a bit more luck!!

The backwards and forwards method snaps them everytime. I found the best way was to apply tension with a standard bar and socket, while someone tapped on the end with a decent hammer.

Update.......drill/tap/extractor set purchased some plugs removed, centre electrode in glow plugs proves problematic. Tip on one would not budge so micro drill and tap then horror.. tip drops into cylinder. disaster!! Do not want to remove head.
Anyway much time later and much perseverance alongside purchase of microbore camera, broken tip is extricated from cylinder via injector hole..relief.

I do not understand the issue with glow plugs. I'm a mechanic and have changed more glow plugs than I can care to remember and have never snapped one. Am I lucky or just do I know what I am doing?
So today after a week of the Disco not starting at below 0 temps and using easystart instead of fixing it I bought 5 plugs. Only 5 because there was no way the fuel pump was coming off.
The results are that during heavy snow fall that after 175000 miles the 3 plugs that can be replaced without anything apart from the engine cover and the oil filter housing being removed came out very easily.
She started afterwards no problem. I'll try again tommorow but I'm confident.

Just did the same job. Bought the special 1/4" drive 10/20/30/40Nm air impact driver expecting a battle. Only did 5 like NSRGOD. 24hrs with plus gas then 10Nm setting.... all 5 spun straight out. Could have done it with a regular rachet! The shaft sections were all pretty clean and just a descent coating of carbon on the tips but no bulging.
In fact they came out so easily I began to doubt that my starting issue was the glow plugs. Put them straight on the test meter and all were either fully or very nearly open circuit. Definitely all duff. I might have just been lucky, or it might be that I followed the tip on here of putting a good quality engine cleaning additive in and thrashing the off it for a tankful. Either way it was a big relief.

I had a 2005 Sport in. Braced him for worst case, he didn't want to spend that sort of money on the car, so he got rid and traded it in against a new Sport
The original Sport made its way back to us, where all 6 plugs came out in 1 piece, after about 4 hours or perseverance My D3 Build Thread

£400 best case? So if all 6 just spin out is still £400? Seems a bit steep to me. Is a lot of that labour getting the fuel pump off etc?
