My timed climate always gets the screen defrosted no matter how frozen the screen is
Temp gauge usually registers just under halfway to normal and heater is just starting to get toastie.
All in all a great extra this time of year which always has my neighbours looking on in envy as they scrape away at their windscreens
Also it worked the other day when my petrol light was on and range said 27 miles, I thought it wasn't supposed to work with the petrol light on, or was that the D3?Discovery 4 HSE

Does the timed climate take much heat from the engine? On the temp gauage?

It puts it into the engine, not take it out.It can when others can't,

I mean the warm coolant is supplying the cabin rather than warming the engine water jacket.

The FBH is a fully independent auxiliary heater.
The FBH will work automatically when the vehicle is started assisting in raising the engine working temperature but only when when certain conditions are met (see guide). Once working temperatures are reached the FBH will cease operation until the cycle repeats.
Likewise providing certain conditions are met the FBH will also operate if worked by remote or timed climate, it will heat the engine coolant using its own recirculating pump and also warm the cabin by automatically engaging the climate system fans assisting in defrosting the vehicle. Depending on the remote type etc, the FBH will run for around 20 to 30 minutes.
In summer if worked by remote it can work the opposite way by engaging the climate system fans thus assisting in cooling the cabin temperature, only the climate fans will operate the FBH itself will not start as the temp conditions are not met.

I'm unsure on mine whether or not it only confuses things, after FBH running the car doesn't start well, as if it's confused why the water temperature is so warm and yet the rest isn't.

I doubt if the FBH is confusing things, it sounds like there is another underlying issue which is causing the problem.

You are not running the FBH long enough, it is heating the engine sufficiently enough to tell the heating plugs not to operate but not long enough to help the fuel to ignite.
If you are running the FBH for 30 minutes the water thermostat may be faulty and partly stuck open.It can when others can't,

The only reference used by the glowplugs is the ECT data. If the coolant is warm then the glowplugs will have reduced output or zero output. Meanwhile the rest of the system, including the injectors, are working in accordance with a cold start (ie more fuel and extended cylinder charge to mitigate the fuel condensing on the bore).
As an aside, the D3s I see that have no difference between an FBH pre-heat and a straight start always have knackered glowplugs.

same. On a cold morning I blip the remote. Fbh runs for 30 mins. Get in turn the key. Temp gauge is sitting halfway to normal temp. Turn the key and it ticks over like a dog! So not worth using.
