Eeeek - no revs and LOTS of smoke. |
|
Went to start up this am. Engine kicked in with low revs for about 10 secs then cut out. 08, Diesel, Auto.
Turned off and started again - revs got to about 800rpm, nothing happened when I pressed accelerator - think it got to about 1000 revs. Loads of smoke - like a cold start but for much longer.
Engine management light on.
Tried engaging reverse - would not even move it on the drive - which is only a mild incline.
Thoughts?

Should add that MPG has taken a dip for the last fortnight by about 5mpg - but I had put this down to the FBH kicking in regularly.

That is definitely a failed EGR. Mine the exact same thing in an underground car park in France last year. You could get it going by slipping a 2 pence bit in the pipe where the clamp to the intake chamber fits. The tension in the stainless steel pipe will hold it in.

What colour is the smoke? And does it sound like it's firing right on all cylinders, or is it sounding rough? Might help the more technical on here (not me!) figure out what's going on.
Sounds like a lack of fuel to me; fuel filter/pump? Or a sensor somewhere is knackered.
Sorry I can't be more help, sure someone much more technical will be along soon. Hope it's not expensive...

UPDATE - Just been out to see now it is not pitch black. Engine Management light on from the start and doesn't go off.
No longer any smoke - could be that was just a cold start issue?
However revs remain low - engine lacks usual sound of 'grunt' - Will now rev with some gentle encouragement - up to about full revs/ To my ear the engine sounds a bit weak and higher pitched when doing this (but cant say for sure as never paid that much attention to revs when stationary). I did notice the usual 'roar' when starting from cold wasn't there.
Throttle is definitely far less responsive.

My D3 had similar symptoms. Fuel usage up about 4-5 mpg, the occasional large clouds of smoke, and loss of power.
It must be EGR season. D4 SDV6 HSE 11MY - Gone
D3 TDV6 HSE 08MY - Gone

Booked in at Startstone this pm - any advice on what to say to them - want them to play hardball with Warranty Direct so I don't get the typical refusal and subsequent payment after complaint that the EGR issue seems to attract.

Have you got Emissions cover on your WD policy?
If so they should cover them as they're fitted to comply with EU emissions regs The End

Update - Warranty covering replacement of EGR valave and EGR cooler.
Just £50 excess to pay - not bad. The one gripe is that it took Warranty Direct two days to authorise claim, but they would not pay for a hire car as the work was quoted as less than 8 hours. In total car has been with dealer since Wednesday am and won't be back until last thing today or Sat am - so how the hell does this not justify a hire car when THEY are the cause of the delay?
Anyhow - EGRs covered with no hassle on Luxury Care with Emissions Cover through Warranty Direct.

The hire car scam. I had the same with my Honda Civic. Went in to Honda, needed a replacement ECU that had to come from Japan, just after the meltdown over there. 3 hr job..... 4 weeks without a car waiting for car specific coded part. No joy from warranty direct but when it was a £800 quid part i guess they were probably already reeling over that.
ISTR some one posting a couple of years ago about having the same problem when the Tesco policy was out in force
