Economically viable?

Hi

My D3 (2009, 135k miles) is off to the garage next week to be sorted out. It has an intermittent ESF message, slight judder sometimes in the lower gears (more noticeable up hills), rev seeking and slight power loss at times. Wife used it at the weekend 70 mile round trip and no issues at all.

Searching the forums/internet suggests it could be the turbo/torque converter - so probably looking at £1k+

So, my question is at what point does it become economically unviable to keep a car given that the value is around 5.5k (private) and 4k (part exchange)?

Cheers

My D3 is a broadly similar age and mileage to yours ('09, with 124k on the clock). I've owned it for the last five years, and while I'm occasionally tempted to take the D4 plunge (normally when someone posts a really nice one for sale on here!), I see no reason why I shouldn't spend what needs to be spent to keep the D3 alive for a good while yet.

It's an absolute joy to drive, it's proved to be very reliable (so far!). It's never wanted for anything while I've owned it (and as far as I can see the previous owner treated it in a similar way), so I'm hoping there are no massive issues on the horizon. it's still "only" less than 12 years old so doesn't feel like an old vehicle yet, but it's not so "new" that I have a problem with dropping the seats down and throwing a load of old crap in the back when I need to, which I wouldn't feel so comfortable about doing in a shiny new(er) D4! It's not the greatest on fuel economy, but it's not too bad all things considered, and I'm lucky enough to have another car which is waaay less thirsty for times when I don't need the practicality of the D3.

Of course, your perspective may be different - but I love my D3 to bits, and even with the inevitable expenses which are going to rear their heads in the coming years I see no reason why I wouldn't want to hold on to it for quite some time yet. (Of course, I've now jinxed it really badly, the next 12 months will be full of mechanical and electrical nightmares at enormous cost, and this time next year I'll hate the damned thing Razz )

Drtranny (20 quid) and some new gearbox oil (50 quid) will work wonders.

Weigh up the cost of keeping it on the road versus the depreciation on a newer D4.

Of course there’s the hassle factor of getting repairs done, but it can’t lose too much more on depreciation now and if it still meets your needs there’s an argument for keeping it.

thx

I was thinking that even if I do have to drop 1-2k, the car is in pretty good order apart from a dink on the driver door courtesy of a mountain biker hitting a hedge and then hitting my door - we had stopped by the way to let bikes through Rolling Eyes

I heard D4s have had issues with electrics? not sure if it's been sorted out and the only new LR shape I like is the defender.

Will talk to my garage about an oil flush too.

You need to think about the financial outlay to replace the car. If you go for a D4, the newest you’ll get is about 5 years, so it will come with its own potential problems. You know the history of your own car. You should factor that in.

Shop around for prices on replacing the TC as it does vary quite a lot, but once done it’s like driving a new car... I did it on my D3... and now have a new D4 Rolling with laughter

Any particular TC's I should go for or avoid or is it just a case of you get what you pay for?

ISTR mine was about £650 and then fitting, my local indie is very good and did a few other jobs at the same time and it cost me around £1300... including vat... divide that over the age of the car and it’s not such a bad outlay... or that’s what I kept saying to myself Laughing

Done at 124k and after a Mega flush had only made a small difference..

I’d already spent money on getting the car right (and getting the right car) so it’s really down to your individual circumstances... if you do it, it may increase the resale value (to those in the know) to nearly equal the cost of getting it done.. man maths Laughing

Agree with the sentiments above, sounds bad but a £1k repair bill on a D3 is something most of us budget for. It’s a 2009 so if it’s in good running order besides the fault, it’ll see you good for a long time if you plan to keep it, the cost of replacing will be more than the £1k and there will always be the risk that the replacement has a similar fault at some point.

Personally, I’ve done it and spent the cash because I love my D3, first car I’ve owned that I have no plan to replace, tbh, I’ve seen the worst case scenario of blown engines on here and still though that the pain would be sourcing a new engine, rather than what car I would buy after. (Don’t tell the wife)

My Wife thinks the D3 is a hobby, The D3 thinks the wife is 💕
