Duratrac/ general grabber a/t discontinued?? |
|
Hiya all, was wondering whether anyone else had come across this, just had some 19" wheels back from refurb for my d4 and now I need some new boots, I'd got my eye on duratracs, failing that general grabbers, rang a local land rover independent near me who does a lot of tyres etc., only to be told he can't get them, they've now discontinued them due to something going on with goodyear, generals are apparently the same, and I'm told the only way I can get either is if someone has some on the shelf etc.
Was also told that because of the above situation you can bet your ass there will be a new model tyre released later in the year.
Anyone else struggling with tyres or know of a decent tyre duratrac supplier I can try in the west Midlands area??
TIA

I know when I worked at JLR that any winter tyres had to be ordered the spring of the previous year as they only make them in a small window. 1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

I've been looking around and note that the Grabber AT3 is rare online. The Pirelli AT+ is likewise rare as Pirelli no longer do the 255/55/r19 in the UK it seems.
Camskill appear to have the Duratrac if you want to order them:

It goes where others don't.

That's odd as Avon are owned by Cooper.
And Goodyear are merged with Dunlop and also do Fulda and Falken tyres.
So unless they've contracted manufacture of the Duratecs "out of house" ..... but if so, why?

The land rover independent who does tyres by me said something about goodyear selling out to Cooper don't know whether that was the duratrac as a design or whether he meant the actual company??

Falken is a fully owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Rubber Industries. SRI also owns the branding rights for Dunlop Tyres in certain markets and with some vehicle brands while Goodyear owns the rights to use Dunlop Tyres in other markets (North America, Europe, etc.) subject to certain other conditions. So what really happened was that SRI and Goodyear had a joint venture (JV) setup but like most JVs it eventually failed. It’s like the one of the oldest stories in corporate M&A that JVs tend to be doomed from the start. If you’re really interested see the on the aftermath https://corporate.goodyear.com/us/en/media...ement.html. What makes things even more confusing is that Continental owns the rights to Dunlop Tyres in Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia….
You’re correct that Goodyear purchased Cooper in 2021 which had purchased Avon before the turn of this millennium. Goodyear had acquired Fulda sometime in the 1960s.
I don’t think Goodyear itself produced Falkens, though, but the JV company probably did. The JV was named Goodyear Dunlop Tire North America to complicate things even more and maybe the confusion comes from SRI getting Dunlop Motorcycle Tires and the Goodyear branded plant (originally a real Dunlop plant that SRI had gotten when acquiring Dunlop Tire Corporation, kept the name and then contributed it to the JV) as part of the settlement when shutting down the North American JV. The US operation is now trading as Sumitomo Rubber USA..

Have you looked at Halfords?
I have just had 5 Duratracs fitted to my L322 as they had a discount code running with fitting.
For example standard 19 size:
Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac 255/55 R19 111Q FP XL £162.99 each fitted
10% off when you buy 2/3 tyres or 15% off 4 Enter code GOODALLYEAR at basket
I was changing to 18's so had those and my 20's that were on the car and they were happy to either fit and swap the wheels over or just fit the tyres and leave them in the car (if you don't want them playing with the car etc).
Might be worth a look.
