Dual Battery

Hi all.

Going to Iceland for the summer and want to fit second auxiliary battery. Now this was easy in my Defender but not sure in the D4. Has any of you fitted a second battery. I have a national lunar battery management system so want to fit that as well. The main battery will be used for the car and winch with the auxiliary for the bits and bobs used during the expedition. Anyone got a second battery - any ideas where to put it etc...

Thanks

Andrew
 Cheers

Some have moved some bits around in the second battery box under bonnet and fitted in there

I went for the cubby storage in the boot

There is a post in the AULRO forum about clearing the D4 secondary battery box: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/102180...-tray.html

I am about to do the same (one day) in my brother's D4. It is a shame that the less intelligent LR engineers messed the original designated place.

Hi,

due to my bad experiences with a "normal" relay and the second battery I would also suggest the traxide system - several threads can be found here with information from "drivesafe", who sells the traxide system. I will change to traxide before the next tour.

Difference of the traxide systems to others: It will hold the connection of the two batteries as long as the batteries are above 12.0 V (approx.), not only when the generator is working. This is more compatible to the BMS (battery management system), which can be very sensible.

Greetings

Hi Andrew,

we've been to Iceland in 2012 with the D3. We did not go offroading really, more of a family holiday (no, I didn't want to cross ice-cold streams with the family and then get stuck somewhere - was hard enough to convince my wife to come camping to Iceland in the first place - Karsten Tent made the difference to her).

We had the second battery fitted (Traxide) and with all the excellent internet connection everywhere we needed to reload the laptops quite often, the 220V/12V converter together with the Engel box managed to empty the batteries once and I was happy to have the second battery fitted.

I'd go for it.

Cheerio,
Thorsten

Adrian,

Did you run the cables in the car or outside ?

I am think of doing the same as you and I am thinking about taking the 12v cable to the main battery via the rear AC rubbers.

Many thanks - lots to think about.

I like the battery in the boot option, but one further question, the battery cables? Where do they run, inside or outside. If any of you have done either and/or would recommend one or the other
 Cheers

I've cleared the aux bay on a d4 to fit an optima yellow top, using the traxide setup. Way more convenient IMHO to have the battery where it should be and then run internal cables if you need power to the back for the fridge. Thumbs Up
