driver's door lock - computer or latch problem?

I posted this issue on RetiredBob's recent thread so thought I'd repost as a separate item.

.... all the doors on my D3 unlock with the remote & dash button, and all door except the driver's door lock with the remote & dash button. The dealer indicated the problem wasn't with the latch mechanism but with the computer sending the instructions to the latch.

The price for fixing the problem was $800 for a new computer plus labour. I cheaped out and now use the key to manually lock the door.

Does this set of facts make sense or is the issue simply the latch itself?

edit: typo corrections

Idea Check the latch by locking the motor (with you inside) and then pulling the relevant door handle ...if the door opens it's not likely to be the latch Wink

EDIT: forget that ...just re-read and locking is the problem rather than unlocking Embarassed

Well I tried the process anyway which gave me one more observation. As far as I can tell, there is no noise coming from the latch when I hit the lock button, though given the ability to unlock, there is a corresponding noise from the lock. Not sure this aids with the diagnosis....

Sounds like the Latch is faulty. Never heard of an ECU being replaced to fix that...

Can't put too much info on here about how the locking system works TBH ...but
Quote:
To enable the SPE (single point entry) function, the lock motor in the driver door latch is operated by two dedicated connections with the CJB (central junction box)
Also appears that there should be some specific DTC's available ...most that refer to the drivers door lock in an unlocked state suggest a relay issue.

Hopefully someone more technical be along soon to assist further Thumbs Up

thanks for the responses gents.

would seem odd that the ECU would stop sending out messages to lock a single door. is the relay integrated into the latch mechanism itself? any chance its an issue with the wiring loom and anyway a ludite like me could check either of these possibilities?

I do believe the relays are in one of the junction boxes Thumbs Up

Thanks for the response. Would you know where to get a description of the relays in the CJB? The user manual is vague to say the least! I see two items on the engine bay JB that have a key symbol - R13 and fusible link 11. Not sure if these are the 2 previously mentioned.

well, i did some fiddling and swapped relays with the same part number with the R13 relay. ditto with FL11, though this didn't fix the problem. am loathe to swap out the latch if there's a chance its something else. any thoughts on next steps? thanks

If the other latches are working OK, I'd put money on the fault being in the latch mech for that door. There are 2 small motors in each latch mechanism - one for the lock mechanism and the other for deadlock I think.

The latch itself is cheap - about £34 in UK (cheapest) - probably 2 hours labour to get it changed.
