If this doesn’t hit the nail on the head

Two patients limp into two different medical Clinics with the same complaint. Both have trouble walking and appear to require a hip replacement.

The FIRST patient is examined within the hour, is x-rayed the same day and has a time booked for surgery the following week.

The SECOND sees his family doctor after waiting 3 weeks for an appointment then waits 8 weeks to see a specialist, then gets an x-ray, which isn’t reviewed for another week and finally has his surgery scheduled for 6 months from then
Why the different treatments for the two patients?

That’s fine until the family say, “ Sorry we can’t afford that, we’ll just have to put him down.” Shocked Rolling with laughter

It's not just old folk you know. Happens to us all.

Of course, like the vets, you can pay to get treatment much quicker...

The vet analogy demonstrating why a private “pay as you go” medical care system backed up by insurance would be better than state owned healthcare presumably?

It would for those who could afford the insurance costs. See the USA for an example of how it leaves millions without adequate healthcare.

Of course those who can't afford medical insurance are also those who pay little or no NI either. Thumbs Up

Another interesting contrast:
people who make flammable models to face a higher standard of justice than people who make flammable flats.

There's an easy solution to that - it's called cash. Thumbs Up

Arguably less dubious than leaving many who could afford insurance with inadequate healthcare...but that aside, sure, we could look at one system - the only such system - or we could ditch the Anglo-centrism and look more widely; perhaps take a leaf out of our European neighbours' books?

Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark, France, Israel, Singapore?

Put together the best parts of those and we really could have a healthcare system that's the envy of the world. Wink

As I recall, a conservative estimate is that the NHS costs around £4000 a year for an average family.

This is is a point seldom made also: https://iea.org.uk/how-the-nhs-hurts-the-poor/

I believe you are right. I was taking the NI contributions against the average salary for a single person.

It's an interesting question though...

Why people will take out private medical insurance for their pets but not their children.

Indeed. Very poor taste stunt but whilst people were offended, nobody died.

One of the problems with the way it is funded and used at the moment is there is far too much bloat. It's the equivalent of "free" electricity so everyone goes to work leaving the iron on because it's "free" and leaving it on is easier than turning it off.

I'm dubious of the actual impact of health care tourism, nevertheless, it is a good example of the organisation running without due care to efficiency.
