I think Steve has the right idea that VED should be replaced with a realistically priced annual administration fee to allow you to use the vehicle on the roads, set at the same level for all vehicles.
He suggests that £25 - £50 per annum would be more than enough, and I agree but if adopted it's more likely to be £50 or more.
Post CV19 I am sure that all classes of taxation, IT, VAT, IHT etc.. will increase and would anticipate that fuel duty is likely to increase on account of "global warming".
I wonder how they will tax electricity & hydrogen used to power EVs though, as they replace ICEVs ?
I feel my D4 is probably the last ICEV which I will buy. Unless JRL produce a Disco 4, or Defender 110 BEV I fear my next car is likely to be a Rivian R1S - https://rivian.com/r1s/.
Range - up to 400 miles
0 to 60 MPH in 3 seconds !
4 WD, of course & Wading depth over 3 feet
Up to 750 BHP
Maximum towing weight 7,700 lbs
Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price starting at $72,500 - say £60k
That's enough for me

What gets me is the D3 cut off in early 2006.
Example - 2 Discoveries roll off the production line one after the other.
Both delivered to the same Dealer on the same day, the later one is bought and registered before the cut off and has the cheaper tax. The earlier one is left lying in the Dealers compound for 4 weeks before its bought and registered but as its after the cut off, it now has the higher tax.
Crazy, but suppose its all about the money
Whats really ironic is that the EU4 models are cleaner than the EU3, but they pay more VED

Completely agree with all of the above...
My biggest gripe is that if you are the only driver for more than one vehicle you still pay VED on the vehicles you are not using... and don't get me started on having to tax a vehicle from the start of the month (irrespective of the date you bought it) but when you cancel the tax it stops on the day... so double taxing... yet again I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

80,000 miles? That's 330 a day, assuming a 5-day week and 4 weeks' holiday, equating to about 7 hours's driving at decent speeds.
Sorry to be pedantic, but it's lockdown and I'm bored.
I averaged 89k miles a year as a field service tech for a lift company !

and you have people who pay zilch VED complaining about pot holes if every car owner paid the cost of filling one pot hole up there would not be any.
Chap I know does 80,000 miles per year and pays zero VED and others have a Disco sat in the garage doing next to nothing and are being charged £580
That is exactly my complaint.

I think you are missing the point with VED rates.
The idea is to reduce specific, and collective, vehicle emissions. Unfortunately, heavy old cars are bad for air quality. Deletion of EGR and DPF make this even worse, probably illegal but no enforcement.
If you look at VED charges for newer vehicles, similar size and spec, the rates come down considerably.
But I’m not missing the point really. They don’t want me to run my type of car and they want me to pay for it. Then when it suits them they penalise you for buying a car powered by the fuel that they encouraged you to buy.
As I said .”disgusting “

the point is VED is almost nothing to do with running a car - its just a tax take by another name, so a revenue generator for the govt of the time. And taxing a big ticket item, like your car (or stamp duty on a house) gets big numbers into Govt coffers. If something else was as popular as cars, then these would be taxed - e.g why not tax mobile phones?

I’ve got a 66 Series 2a. It’s noisy and uncomfortable, leaks, is very very thirsty, but is pretty reliable and the best bit - free road tax, mot exempt, and cost £150 to insure.
I think I could even take it into central London FOC? Not sure on this!
However I have a D4 that costs the £500 plus, and it’s only done 10k Miles this year.
Whatever, I think we will all be paying more for years to come to get out of this .

I'd rather have the VED element added to fuel.
And in doing so there will be extra revenues for HMRC.
1) the more you drive & pollute in the UK- the more you pay.
2) there won't be any more (VED) "tax dodgers".
3) foreign users who drive/pollute in the UK would now also be contributing to HMRC.
4) users of light & heavy plant machinery (from chain saws through to earth movers) would also now be contributing to HMRC.
All makes sense to me. I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

It’s too simplistic to think that the more miles you travel the more you should pay. Take the U.K. haulage industry for example. The additional cost would have to be passed on to their customers, ultimately meaning that everything that has to be transported by road, would cost more.
The lower mileage users subsidise the higher mileage users, just as the higher earners subsidise the low earners when it comes to income tax.
