Discovery 4 Service Interval - Fixed or Dynamic? |
|
Good morning,
I'm a newbie on here with a service question. I bought a "64" plate Discovery 4 SE Tech last year after many years with a Freelander 2.
When I bought it, I knew the big 7 year service was due. There was no "Service Required" message showing and I assumed the dealer had reset it. I bought the car and had all service items brought up to date including belts etc at 65500 miles on 20th Aug 2021.
One year later, I was expecting a "Service Required" message but nothing flagged up. The car has had an easy year doing just 4500 miles which were mostly long distance.
After another month there was still no message and nothing on the car's on board computer to show what time or distance is left until a service is due. Service documentation says 1 year or 15,000 miles but obviously doesn't take into account driving style etc. The LR OSH also shows that the service is overdue. I haven't rushed to get it serviced because of the low mileage and the the oil level is at Max.
This morning the Service Required message has pinged (Aha!) so I will book it in. I'm assuming it's decided it needs a routine service after nearly 14 months and that it's not something else that is wrong.
So my question is does my car have dynamic service intervals - I can't find any documentation to confirm?
Many thanks.
Dave

The D4 does have somewhat of a dynamic service interval, the onboard computer will determine if it needs a service sooner (this is most prevalent on adblue models) but it is still a max interval of 12 months or a set milage (can’t remember off the top of my head).
In short it needs a service at least once every 12 months but may need one sooner depending on your usage.

Thanks both for your replies,
I had seen the service sheet specifying 12 months or 15,000 miles but was confused that no Service Required message had flagged up. My 2012 FL2 would ping Service Required approaching 12 months with a countdown to the date and I guess I was expecting the D4 to do the same. Just seems odd that the D4 will prompt you if it wants earlier attention but won't remind you at 12 months when it's routine service is due.
I've just looked at the LR OSH again and there is indeed a note which says:-
"Please note that service intervals always represent the maximum time and distance that should exist between servicing. Driving style and conditions may necessitate earlier servicing as indicated by the notifications on your instrument panel".
So I'll set myself a reminder for next year, unless it tells me sooner.
Thanks for your help.
Regards
Dave

A further update I hope you can help with. I only get the Service Required message in a certain scenario.
If I jump in the car, press the brake pedal and press START to start the engine normally I get a message saying "Tyre pressures set to normal, press OK to clear". I press OK and I do not get any Service Required message and off I drive. The car has always thrown up this message and I was assured this was normal by the salesman - hmm.
If I press the START button without pressing the brake in order to get to the service menu etc I get the same Tyre Pressure message and I press OK to clear - the engine is not running at this point. If I press the START button again, the engine starts and I get a Service Required message temporarily.
It's like the Service Required message only comes on when the engine is started and the Tyre Pressure message has already been previously cleared before starting the engine. If I start the car normally the Service Required message seems to get hidden and/or possibly cleared when clearing the Tyre Pressure message.
Should I not be getting the Tyre Pressure message, like maybe the TPMS is not working or something?
I'd appreciate any further guidance or clarification.
Regards
Dave

The TPMS message is normal, when I have had a service required countdown appear it has always come up straight after the TPMS message.
If you start straight up and leave the TPMS message to clear without pressing anything (it will clear itself after a few seconds) do you get service required then?

Thanks jimbo55,
I just tried it again. I started the engine straight up and as you say, the Tyre Pressure message disappears by itself after a little while if I don’t clear it myself, but as before, I still do not get the Service Required message flagging up.
I tried hitting the START button without the brake to bring the ignition on without starting the engine again. I let the Tyre Pressure message clear by itself in this mode and then hit the START button a second time to start the engine, and this time I did get a Service Required message temporarily.
So it doesn’t seem to matter whether the Tyre Pressure message gets cleared by me or clears itself, but it does seem to matter when the Tyre Pressure message clears. I only get the Service Required message after starting the engine if the Tyre Pressure message was previously cleared before starting the engine.
Don’t know if that points to anything, other than the fact that the software could be better.
Many thanks.

I’ve never seen a service required message in 5 years D4 ownership, obviously I service before it’s recommended time. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Why bother with a read out, they need servicing every 12 months maximum providing you are not doing high mileage sooner if you are, extend this time/mileage criteria at your own peril, snapped crankshaft springs to mind It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

@M3DPO - yes I've read about crankshaft failures and will get it serviced each year as you suggest.
I'm probably being pedantic by wanting to know why something is not behaving properly as opposed to just working around it. My owners manual does say my car has a Service Indicator Interval that will inform me when a service is due with a time/distance indication - but it doesn't. And yet it seems to behave correctly for Jimbo55. Maybe it's something to do with the age/version of the car or the version of software on the ECU.
It's booked in for a service in a couple of weeks. I'll ask them to look at the SII to see if they can find an issue.
Regards
Dave
