I have borrowed in the past specifically for putting a ladder on. They were absolutely fine as long as you use propoer strappings and don't tie a stokers dhoby hitch!Joined the BMWX5 45e group

If you are talking about the original LR bars then yes, they are very good indeed.
Mine have been on many adventures on top of many forum member's vehicles over the years and still look as good as new.
Wish I got to go on as many holidays as my roof bars.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

There's a bit of a technique to putting them on (candle wax helps a lot) but once on they're excellent IMO.

The usable width of the LR bars is poor when compared to Thule equivalents. You also can't buy spares for them (although you will find some Thule parts will fit them).
If you're not carrying much stuff, then it shouldn't be a problem and they will work just fine.
If you're planning on carrying a roof box and a kayak - or any other bits and pieces - then you should look elsewhere.
In summary, the usable width of the LR bars is between 85cm and 90cm. The longest Thule bars you can fit to a D3/D4 give you a usable width of 135cm. Quite a difference.
You might also find the load capacity of other brands is quite a bit higher than the LR ones which, I think, are rated at 80Kg.

The LR bars are rated to the value of the roof which, by the book, is pretty low. I'm sure the bars are far stronger, as is the roof. The bars are narrow compared to what is on the market now. I guess the stylists at LR won the debate.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

I wouldn't use anything else on the roof apart from LR approved fixings, always have done!

I replaced my roof bars with a rack and added some thule rail to it to take all the add ons for the boats and bikest. Both non standard LR but a far better job.

Looking at a few second hand bars at the moment...couple from disco 3 owners. .
Just to check - the bars fit on both disco 3 and 4 don't they?
I have the original LR black bars which I bought second hand for the 3 and they fit my 4
