Thats a story!

I would thing a "Range Rover County" is not the way to go, its a confusion of identification.

The whole ethos of the D3 is underpinned by the two words on the bonnet; "Land Rover" They are big and bold, and proud of the true heritage of the brand. They project the reality of its true go anywhere ability.

No disrespect to Range Rover owners, but the whole branding is different.

Interesting read DG. Did the writer realise that the RRS and D3/LR3 are so closely related (at present)? If the RRS and D3/LR3 separate (ie the RRS does "move up half a notch in size" and gets to better fill the niche below the FFRR) then the D3/LR3 would logically follow suit, BUT, the writer says that the Range Rover County "won't be as tall, heavy, or thirsty" as the D3/LR3.

Agreed that it needs to be lighter but at what cost to the structural and mechanical integrity? - it presently seems to be a bloody tough vehicle.

The Range Rover Coupe sounds like it will satisfy the needs of a whole lot of present RRS owners.

And as for the Defender, if the electronics could be cut back to a large degree, then the D3/LR3 platform would be a good base for a new Defender to my way of thinking.

Tripe. It's an American magazine (with apologies to our American contributors here, this isn't intended as an attack on the US in general) and it's got an American view of how they think LR will play their market. Unfortunately, for them, fortunately for us, LR does have other markets. The LR3 in the US may well get the badge Range Rover County but it will definitely be a Discovery in the UK for a long time yet. Not only that, the D3 is so perfectly fit for its market niche in just about every market around the world that LR cannot afford to meddle to any great extent with it's design. Make it lighter and you loose strength, make it less tall and you lose headroom.

They're just speculating. If they get it wrong, which they have, the article will be forgotten in a few months. In the unlikely event that they're right, then they can boast that they had the info first.

And anyway, after reading this months LRO article about the facelift Defender, who thinks that will just 'fade away'?

They are also talking tripe about the Defender - Ford has the ideal platform for the next Def in the Transit. The current Transit underpinnings are the only ones in the UK that are engineered to take front wheel drive, rear wheel drive or 4wheel drive without any mods required to the chassis at build time
Now a disillusioned new Land Rover buyer and have jumped ship to something less expensive and more reliable that hugs trees.... now driving a Mini Countryman PHEV as well as my trusty and brilliant 1996 Epsom Green Defender90 Tdi300

Yes, but the article states "...according to some long-range product planners at the Premier Automotive Group." The magazine is reporting what these planners are saying. PAG's North American HQ in California is still PAG. Anyhow, I didn't read it as Automobile Magazine writers speculating about the future of LR products. And I do hope the planners' report does not turn out to be. The last thing LR needs is to water down the brand to a luxury-oriented, 20"+ chrome wheel crowd.

Yeah, the H2s have it, but you'd be amazed at how many Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports there are in the Atlanta area - particularly Buckhead. There are definitely a lot of Discovery 2/3s, but you'd think they're giving away RRs/RRSs. Oh, and they have to have bling. That's something that goes with the territory around here - hip-hop capitol of the South. I doubt any of them have seen anything more off-road than the curb they ran over while squawking into a cell phone.
