Discovery 4 gearbox fault |

2015 Disccovery 4 gearbox fault.
Hello all, my first post and it's not the best of news.
I have owned the car for 3 weeks it's the HSE 3.0 SDV6 8 speed automatic. It's been faultless until sunday when it started up fine but the rotary gear selector would not turn and won't move from the P position and the display is showing GEARBOX FAULT (press ok to clear, it doesn't). Had to have the car recovered to a local garage who seem to think the rotary selector is faulty as they had this problem with a Range Rover whiich they assume is a similar set up. The battery seems ok, car starts and runs ok and the brake lights are fine. There were no faults or any inkling of a problem before this happened, any ideas as to what could have caused this and fault codes to look out for. The car has covered 68000 miles and has full history.
Thanks in advance, Ash.

I’m hoping that’s the worst case scenario, not particularly cheap for the part but a relatively easy fix.

Good (ish) news, all faults cleared and the car now drives as it should. Apparently there is a solenoid in the selector which was stuck and not allowing the dial to turn. They can’t guarantee it won’t happen again so a new selector is being ordered. Going to cost a few quid but I think it’s worth it for peace of mind and I suppose it could have been a lot worse.

these parts are pretty cheap on ebay and are plug and play* and really easy to replace
*caveat - DiscoMikey did report he'd seen some that were coded to VIN so check sellers have good return policy. Stolen - D4 Loire Blue

Its worth keeping an eye on ebay, I bought a complete centre console with Fridge etc along with rotary selector and terrain response etc recently so have a spare selector if i ever need one. Must stop buying shiny toys....

Thanks for the replies. It’s tempting to buy a used unit off eBay but having been stuck once I’m wary about buying something that might not be any better than I’ve already got. Next time it happens I could be in the middle of nowhere with a car full of the wife and kids and I don’t fancy getting stuck with them lol.

New old stock parts will likely be the old part numbers, and will suffer the same issues down the line
The new parts have been upgraded to prevent future issues... My D3 Build Thread

Just been quoted £300.91p inc vat for the part + a drink for fitting (good friend who owns garage passed on trade discount), not the best start to Land Rover ownership but I'm satsfied with that after reading some of the horror stories on various forums.
Disco Mikey, I did read somewhere that the newer units had been uprated that's why I thought it better to go for a new one.

Great info here.
Without attempting to hijack the thread, can I ask if no light around the dial is an indication of looming troubles? And if so, way?
(I have purchased a D4 earlier this year with a warranty, but no lights around the dial)

I had to do a temporary fix on one of these recently with a failed shift lock solenoid. The temporary fix involved a rubber band but it got us out of trouble!
