Discovery 3.0 TDV6 head gasket replacement

Good day fellow contributors. I have a 2009 Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6, and need to replace the head gaskets. Has anybody attempted this with the engine in situ. Lifting the body off is not an option for me. Is there any links to other people’s experience, I would be very grateful for any help.

I can’t help but I presume it’s only one head gasket would need replacement, for both sides to be gone at the same time would be unusual. Is it the nearside or offside that’s in trouble? That might make a difference for access.

I will do both sides. The car was allowed to drive for too long whilst overheated. I feel happier doing both sides.

It would be a struggle to do it with body on. I wouldn't like to try it.

It’s a struggle but doable but a 1000 times easier with the body off and I’d park it in a shed until I could get the body off from experience,what’s your issue I’d be very surprised if there damaged/blown as there metal shims basically unlike conventional head gaskets,if it’s been cooked then possibly expect warped heads and without checking I think skimming is not advisable.

If you don’t have issues and you just want to change them because it got hot I personally wouldn’t bother can you elaborate on what happened as we maybe able to point you in the right direction Thumbs Up

The car turns over at a normal speed but sounds as if there is no compression and it also builds pressure in the header tank which would also make me suspect that its the head gasket.
I’m starting to believe I will need to lift the body off. I am contemplating using 4 hi-lift jacks and 4 mates to lift the body, remove engine and lower body back whilst engine is being overhauled.
By the way the car has done 147k miles

I think you would be better spending your money on another lump rather than dig your self a potential money pit with one thing after another going wrong.

As for lifting body on hi lift jacks it may work but stability will be a major issue!

A trolley jack is sort of stable, hi lifts are certainly not and 4 together will certainly be fun.

Hi lift jacks are about as unstable as you could get. We raised the roof of a shed 40’X15’ using one small bottle jack and timber blocks. Another option could be to raise the entire discovery on maybe 4 high lift trolley jacks prop the body solidly in position and disconnect and drop the chassis, it probably only needs less than 2’ to get clear of each other.

I agree the more I think about it the hi-lift jacks is a non starter. I am going to persevere because I like the discovery and I also like diy and I’m bugged if I’m going to let this beat me. I don’t have or plan to have a car lift, so I best get thinking. Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome, nothing is stupid (remember my hi-lift idea😂😂😂).

The first body I took off I used two small fork lifts under the sills Shocked but not everyone has access to forklifts Laughing Thumbs Up
