Nope. The exhaust on mine is like new. I cant even recall a joint when I dropped it down to splice the brake lines a few year back

Replaced thermostat housing on Saturday. Separate write up in another thread, won’t go into that here. Bleeding air out was a genuine PITA. I’m reasonably sure there’s still air somewhere since the level in the expansion bottle fluctuated on Sunday even when warm. Also the pipes towards the heater core are not full of fluid when squeezing them, thus the comment about having air somewhere.

As the throttle body and elbow got cleaned quite well at the same time I have noticed the following:
- there isn’t a short funny rumble when starting. My guess is that the flap was slightly sticky and engine management needed to open it slightly more or did something back and forth with it. It vanished as if by magic.
- the car feels more reactive when giving it throttle, my friend who helped commented on that already on Saturday evening when we were driving around at various speeds to test if everything worked
- when rolling to a stoplight and hitting the gas there isn’t a clunk from the driveline. The California stop software update is supposed to fix it but I haven’t applied it. Shocked I have no idea how the driveline thump and cleaning throttle body have to do with each other but it’s gone.

Possibly I’ll take a look at the heater core next weekend, one idea we thought of was to add bleeder connections to both of those pipes, similar to the T-piece but made out of copper Whistle

What‘s the California stop software update?
Sounds like a possible fix to my problem:
From time to time when I slow down, just before coming to a halt, the engines rev up by itself. I need to press hard on the brakes to prevent the car from pushing forward. That‘s really scary!
I thought it was a sticky throttle - cleaned it but no luck. Maybe a transmission issue - no difference after a mega flush. Now I think it could be software related.
Did anyone experienced something similar?

The California shunt is when the gearbox "cant find a gear" when coming to a stop and restarting. It then finds a gear but its does so with a shunt. I've had it on Volvos and BMWs from the same time period. Software cured the BMW.

I use to have it now and then, one road junction in particular, but its seems to have completely disappeared following new front arms and a rear upper arm.

Passed inspection (UK equivalent is MOT) today with no remarks. Inspector said vehicle is in very good shape for its age and wished me well until next year again.

Thumbs Up

Congratulations 🎉.
I also passed last week Swiss MOT. We call it MFK (Motor-Fahrzeug-Kontrolle). It‘s very similar to German TÜV:

Only issues were broken plate light and non working headlight washers.
I checked all fuses and relay for the washers which seem to be ok. Any ideas where to look else?

A definition of shunt is to push from behind. So I imagine what is being described is like a push or a surge?

Did you have issues with PCV or did you replace just because? I did the latter when I purchased the car.

I looked at the MAF last weekend but didn’t see a point in messing with it since there were no symptoms and it looked clean.

Had this been mentioned on the site at all? Apologies if it has :

"What is E10 fuel and how will it affect you? | RAC Drive" https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/emissio...ffect-you/

Any idea on E10 vs D3's V8?

When I lived in Australia, they had Ethanol added to the fuel, it may even have been called E10. Everyone said it was the devils fuel and not to use it. Nobody gave me a reason why. The only bit I read about it is that it could cause some fuel pipes to perish. I stuck with 95 Octane or above as it was readily available.

The V8 has a Knock sensor so it should cope combustion wise I would imagine

The issue could well be degradation of fuel lines
