Discovery 3 V8 HSE without screen or reverse sensors |
|
Hi everyone,
I have just picked up a discovery 3 V8 HSE. Overall I’m very happy with it it’s a clean car with all the extras I wanted including the additional AC option for the 2nd and 3rd row seats.
The only weirdness with my car is that I have come to find that based of its vin it looks like it was specced originally for the Japanese domestic market. Meaning the parking sensors are amiss (seems this wasn’t available on the HSE at all in Japan) and the screen as it was an option on the HSE in Japan. What makes it even more strange is that it’s not an import on the V5 or HPI check and was registered new in the uk bang on when it should be. Yet I have a Japanese vin…. (SALLAJA********)
Now I know it’s been covered to death on screen retrofits and parking sensor retrofits….. but in my case I wondered if anyone would know if it would be easy with my example to add the screen or parking sensors due to it being a HSE?
The biggest issue with retrofits for both of these in lower spec models is the lack of wiring loom which makes the job not worth it. But in my case I wonder if the loom is in fact there…….
If anyone has any insight it would be greatly appreciated, apart from that all other HSE additions seem to be in place.

Remove the left panel in the boot. See if the park wiring is present. Beige and black plugs
No your won’t have display wiring. If you really what to retrofit, fitting the D4 denso display is the sensible option as it’s easier to wire etc.
You will likely need a gap iid to enable

I have a 2006 SE D3 (in New Zealand). Mine was first registered in Japan, and then imported into NZ in 2010 (we have quite a few 2nd hand Ex Japan cars on our roads, Japan is RHD, drive on left side of road, as with NZ, UK).
Likewise mine has no parking sensors in either the rear or front bumpers. Despite this I was getting rear parking sensor faults on the GAP IID. I removed the left rear panel and discovered that the parking sensors ECU was there. I unplugged it and cleared the faults and they have never returned. (Note I don't have the parking sensor button on the dash either).
So you may have the parking sensor ECU sitting behind your panel too. I don't however have the wiring loom in the rear bumper.
I do have the sat nav/4WD info screen (factory fitted).
Cheers Blake

Thanks for the replies everyone. I’ll check to see if I have the parking sensor plugs (and hopefully the ecu too!). On the slim chance my HSE has the display plugs and dangling inside what am I looking for? Cheers

Thanks for the info. Does yours show as imported on the V5 or on a HPI check? Mine shows registered from new in the UK! Despite it having a Japanese vin and sharing the Japanese HSE spec. Very odd.
My only guess is land rover built the vehicle originally for export but for some reason it never left.

So behind the display there should be 2 connectors.
A blue one with a grey cable for navigation. This should appear under the passenger seat (looking from the rear)
The display should have a grey multiwire connector.
The D3 navigation was poor even 10 years ago!
If you are wanting a reversing camera, I would recommend a D4 display and GAP IID to get it working ~£500.

Thanks for the info, I’m after the 4x4 screen really! If it’s not easy to add I’ll likely add an android unit.
Unless the D4 one doesn’t require running a new loom through the car…

Ok - mine says "no of former keepers 0"
" Was registered overseas declared manufactured 2007"
This is on the front page under "Special notes"

How odd, nothing of the sort on mine. Says declared new at first registration and just says number of keepers nothing in special notes about being import. Registration date is same as manufacture also.

Wiring wise.
The D4 screen requires:
Ground
2 power supplies which can be piggybacked off fuses behind the glovebox
An optical fibre MOST orange loop to supply the screen with data (from the factory headunit). Around £15
If you want the NAV to work, you also require:
Speed MPH wire
GPS Antenna and cable
Trouble is, you also need the D3 mounting frame and bezzel. I know someone on here has a rusty one!
Info here:
https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/discovery-4...navigation
Thinking about it, it's the D3 Navigation that is the really hard part to retrofit. The above 3 wires is probably the same for a D3 screen without Nav!
However if you want a reverse camera, you are much better having a D4 display, (GAP IID Required to enable camera and 4x4 too)

Thanks for that. So looks like I should be able to get 4x4 information easiest via the D4 screen. Thanks for the guide seems easy enough, slightly concerned I may be lacking some wiring…..
I guess I’ll have to pull apart and see what’s there. Does this most wire go into the back of the 6CD changer?

So I’ve decided looking at prices I will be taking the plunge. I’ve found a discovery 4 screen, do you know the part numbers for other cables needed if I have no screen originally installed? Looking at my vin on the decoder it seems my 6CD changer has MOST.
Appreciate it. I’ll be looking to do a video or picture write up as there seems to be no guides for installing on a discovery with no screen.

The d4 screen MUST be a Denso brand. Refer to my link above. (Which gives 95%) of what info you need
I’ll write more this eve
