Discovery 3 Tailgate Intermittent Fault
a month ago my discovery 3 tailgate decided to fail. From the great forums on this site I managed to get the boot open and the cable had broken in the actuator, so I went off to a local LR supplier and fitted new actuator and cable. The part was fitted and worked ok for a week and the failed. So i went back to the forum and thought it would be the microswitch so new part fitted, re assembled and the tailgate worked for 24 hours then nothing. The lock/unlock theory on the dash doesn't work for me so again trim removed and gate open. So today dismantled again and new latch fitted. All worked well whilst trim wasn't attached and then trim attached and then the gate won't open.
I can only think that there is some sort of electrical failure in the circuit. Has anyone experience this type of problem?
PS - If anyone in the Essex area needs the tailgate opening on a disco 3 I am now a master!
Thanks
Tom

Hi
first replacement - actuator cable and latch
second replacement - microswitch
third replacement cable and latch (because I thought the microswitch in the latch was faulty)
I can only think that the actuator I bought on the first replacement was faulty. This part was not from a LR dealership.
I will replace the actuator then the whole set up should be new.
Is there a relay on this circuit as I might replace that also
You can't hear the actuator working.
The tailgate switch doesn't open it.
The lock/unlock buttons don't open it.
Assuming the above is correct then it is either the actuator or the wiring to the actuator.
Seeing as you have replaced the actuator already, I would suspect the wiring first but then again...

No, it uses an FET in the central junction box (CJB). Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

Yes
No Noise from actuator, dash lock/unlock and nothing from the tailgate switch. I bet if I dismantle the boot it will work. So must be a wiring issue
I will have another go

Hey Tom
Did you get this sorted? I've changed micro switch and the latch assembly! It work sometimes but I have to push in the tailgate as I press switch otherwise it won't release! There's no damage to the door, I've tried adjusting the catch thinking it's too tight and dash buttons don't work!
Testing the voltage to the actuator from memory I get circa 12 v! Not every time mind! When it does work that is when the V is higher! It then drops to 10.6v making it not work! Batt V stays steady all the while! Btw. Brand new batt only a month or so ago!
Checked what I assume are earth straps on upper hinges!
I'm out of options! Next I'm guessing it's a wire chasing exercise??
Any idea?Current: D3 commercial

Hi. Has anyone found a solution to this issue as I am having the same problem. The actuator is working, cable is not broken but the tailgate will not open unless I apply hand pressure to the tailgate before pressing the button.
In addition if I press the unlock button repeatedly after the fourth or fifth time the actuator stops working. If I wait a short period of time then press the button again the actuator works.
I have sprayed the lock and cable with WD40 but this does not help.
If I press the two unlock/lock buttons on the dash then there seems to be a more positive unlock "sound" from the actuator and the tailgate partly opens but doesn't unlock fully.
Thanks

Hi
I installed a new actuator. It sorted the problem straight away.

I had a similar problem to this, but I could hear the actuator - it was like the actuator just wasn't powerful enough. Only failed when the car had been sitting with the sun on the rear door on really hot days. So obviously temp sensitive.
Changed the actuator and it worked fine, then the cable broke 2007 Land Rover LR3 4.0L V6

check the wires close to the switch in the handle - mine had been trapped and frayed: causing the intermittent faults.formerly Disco3Ben

I had intermittent problems during the summer when the weather was warm with not being able to open the boot, so ordered a new switch and replaced.
At half term a few weeks ago, I was in France and after the rear of the car had been facing the sun for much of the day the boot again would not open.
I have come to a conclusion that perhaps the hot weather can cause problems to the boot mechanism.
I have had no problems since back in the last few weeks.

nhollandsmith, that's a concern that the new one exhibits the same fault. Mine has been okay since replacement, and we've had some 35+ degree days, however I haven't put the interior trim back on the tailgate door yet, so the air can circulate and keep it cooler. Maybe it need a fan to keep it cool 2007 Land Rover LR3 4.0L V6
