Discovery 3 engine noise when cold

Hi hope someone can clear his up for me

I have a 2.7 discovery 3 2009

When I first start it it sounds really tappy (cammy) when pulling away or under load only lasts for about maybe a mile or so until it’s warmed up a bit then it’s really quiet

Was googleing it and people are saying that’s what Diesel engines do until warm as they need engine temp to burn the fuel properly

Thanks a lot peps

It's what any worn engine does, petrol or diesel with a poor supply of oil to the cam shafts, check correct oil is being used, check oil pressure, a new oil filter and pump may help.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Yea gonna give it a oil change but not so sure it’s cause it’s a worn engine was reading that all diesels do it when cold cause of the way diesel works (diesel knock or something )

Only other thing I think it may be is the lifters not having enough oil pressure to start off with as they loose there pressure when not running

Don’t think it’s that serious as don’t do it for long but sounds just like a engine with incorrect valve clearance if that makes any sense I’m
Thinking maybe a oil flush and a
New
Filter
And oil

Every make of diesel engine is different and even the same type have their own characteristics, and of course theres the owners to take into account as everyone drives different and hears the same sounds differently.
2.7 quite common to have alight tinkle/rattle when first started, as soon as oil light goes out noise should stop and the noise is the cam chain tensioner worn and the oil pressure tensions the er tensioner when engine is running.
As said above video the noise.

4 cylinder diesels do indeed sound like tractors even the modern stuff sounds as rough as can be, listen in any car park as one rattles past, any 6 cylinder should be much quieter even old stuff.

Dont believe all you read on google, in the old says they were called bar stool mechanics Mr. Green

Yea to me sounds like lifters until they build with pressure it’s the same sound as a car that has a ohv engine that needs valve shimming Then it’s really quiet well quiet for a diesel anyway as any diesel is never as quiet as a petrol

But like I said gonna drain oil flush oil through and new filter and oil see if that helps as I’m sure crap old oil won’t help it much especially with the hydronic lifters

I could be wrong but that sounds like injectors to me, remove engine cover and refit oil cap, start engine and get your biggest screwdriver and place the end on each injector in turn and put your ear to the handle, you will be surprised at the noise.

Has the engine cover still got its foam on the inside? there should also be heat proof blankets over each bank of injectors.
