Disco calling

Hi all,I've had my 110 utility for nearly two years now (27000 miles) its great and does everything I need it to do, I work as a floorlayer and it copes fine with that and I deerstalk and pick up with four dogs throughout the shooting season and you couldn't wish for a better vehicle for that, but here's my thing I'm now thinking that a comercial disco would do all the same but in more comfort !! I've had a defender for the last 15 years and love them, not sure what to do as they are stopping manufacturing them will I regret it , any thoughts please would be good.
Cheers

I think if I was a floorlayer grovelling on the floor all day long with a sore back and sore knees, I would want something more comfortable than a Deafener to drive home in. Laughing

you wont regret getting a D3/4 Thumbs Up

Whilst I loved my old defender, I stopped using it even for playtime, as the D3 was so much better as an all round vehicle

Definitely more comfortable in a disco and more elbow room. IMHO the Defender is better for taking off road mainly because its smaller and lighter but the disco is far better as a multi use vehicle Thumbs Up

Why have you posted two identical threads within less than a day of each other?

I only ever had a series 2 Landy, so can't compare to a defender....but my D3 is by far the best car I've ever owned?

There are a few comercial owners on here, but my tip is to make sure you have very deep pockets Thumbs Up

I love my Defender but I only use it for work off roading. It is 24 years old and in some areas, it really feels like it! I used to off road my D4s and they really are the consummate all rounder. They will go MOST places a Defender will the problem being this. In my Defender, I'm not worried about a bit of bramble rash, approach, ramp break over and departure angles are better and it is physically smaller than the D4.

With the D4 though, it is truly luxurious and whilst it doesn't get used off road, it is nice to know that it has huge capability to do so if required. Also, in the recent severe weather we have experienced, there is no other car I'd rather be in if driven properly.

I think the only issue with the D4s other SUVs et al is that quite often, people just think that they're invincible and drive them without any further training. Given that LR give you a Half Day Experience everything you buy a new car, there is little excuse for having even some basic training on the capabilities of the vehicle.

I faced a similar dilemma and, having moved to the D3, would not go back to a defender. Was given a new 110 as a courtesy car in October and couldn't straighten my back for a couple of days after!

I looked seriously at getting a Commercial when buying a D3, but could not justify the additional expense compared to a standard one. They may make sense when buying new, but I could not see the benefits in buying one second hand - they have often had a harder life, less versatile and more basic spec. For the same price as a 2006 90k commercial I bought an 09 SE with 40k (from a main dealer) - you also get a much better choice of vehicles as there are more available.

The hardest thing is to accept that your pride and joy is actually the workhorse (however, I also felt that when I bought my last 110!). Once you have managed to overcome this hurdle then they are every bit as good as a defender - with the possible exception of weight. Even then, I was able to get to 9 sites (all next to rivers) in Kent, Surrey and Sussex about 12 days ago with the vehicle loaded as shown below without sinking (too much) - weighed 3.18T on the weighbridge at the local quarry (should add that the wheels were collected enroute up to Scotland, but when weighed the fuel tank was only 1/4 full and my colleague had been dropped off at the airport to fly home). The D3 has a larger loadspace area than the 110 and, when I'm not working, it'll quickly convert back to a 5/7 seater as per last weekend when it was our 6-yr old's party.

Nah - it's what they are built for! What you can't see behind the external 'skin' that is visible in the photos are the ballast weights, transformers, tirfor, chain hoists, water pump, boat(s), torque multipliers, drums of steel cable etc. It takes us about 15 minutes to load the vehicle every time we leave a site Laughing

First thing I did after getting the D3 was to buy a roll of heavy duty dimpled rubber (1.2m by 10m) and cut this to fit the whole of the rear. When the middle seats are being used, the forward 18-20" simply rolls up behind the seats. Also cut to length to ensure that the tailgate is covered when lowered - cost about £60 from memory, and still have 7m or so left Thumbs Up

Laid this on top of some 13mm wbp ply (section behind middle seats only) and rear end is protected from most abuse. Have now bought a rear 'tray' from Mark on the Forum (visible in the top of the loaded photos) which is in everyday use - stops chainsaw oil, petrol, hydraulic fluid etc from staining the carpets.

Thud

Sadly the tray is not as versatile as the rubber mat as, being lipped, it prevents heavy weights from being slid in and out of the vehicle. However, excellent for general use all the same.
