Both are fairly easy, if you swap the bases around, you need to switch the occupancy sensor, four torx screws hold the base in place or you can take the whole seat out almost as easily - the Torx screws are tight holding the base in place so make sure you have the tool in so you dont strip the head..
Disconnect the battery and let the car sleep before you do it though as you dont want any issues with airbags....Must stop buying shiny toys....

does indeed look like it can be done without removing the seats themselves, is the disco4 seat base (unheated) the same as the disco 3, just incase I want new foam too ?

Very easy straight forward swapping the complete squabs over particularly if you do away with the passenger seat belt sensor, just unplug it and don't reconnect it when in the drivers side, I can't agree more with the above about the screws, the torx socket in the screws is very shallow and easily stripped, make doubly sure you use the correct size and keep it perfectly square on the screw.
Seat max forward and height for the rear accessed through the rear doors, front max back and height accessed from the front footwell.
Tools needed 1/4 drive socket set and good quality torx bits.
To remove the seat belt sensor and refit it to the old drivers squab is a longer fiddling job but quite feasible.
I just happen to have a new D4 foam base never used in my garage looking for a new owner. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Ok done this now, easy without taking the seats out, the green bodyweight connector removal requires some patience. One tip is that when you resintall the seat bases start with the back as the metal bar they connect to is freely moveable. No warning lights, disconnected battery during the process
